While none them has made such a spectacular showing as did Man o War last year, to date it is not easy to tell what is coming. Man o War had shown several good performances early last year, but it was not until at the Saratoga meeting that the son of Fair Play displayed his supreme class. However, there are several eastern youngsters which have never felt the sting of defeat this year. These may be mcntoned as Tryster, Inchcape, Leonardo II. colts and Crocus, a filly. Tryster is not a big colt, but he has done all that trainer James Iiowe has asked him and has won all his five starts in commanding style, his latest success coming in the Sara- tcga Special, in which he defeafed his stable companion, the speedy filly Prudery. Inchcape, the colt for which S. C. Hildreth was reported tot ,have paid J. H. Rosseter 50,000, is another which has never been defeated, but he has only started twice. Inchcape developed a skin disease shortly after his arrival at Saratoga and has not been seen under colors for his iiew owner. Reports say that the fine Friar Rock colt is rounding to from his ailment and probably will start soon. Leonardo II. is a new star which has recently come into the racing firmament and in both his starts has defeated opponents in a manner of a real race horse. Judges who saw the McClel- land celt come from behind in his last effort and win by five lengths marked him as a crack. Fluribus is a good doer and comes from a long line of American-bred stock, which augurs a lasting kind of an animal, and one which can take a bit of knocking about. His owner, T. W. OBrien, is confident Pluribus can beat any of the two-year-olds over a long distance of ground, with weight up, his recent victoiy in the Sanford Memorial Stakes seeming to confirm his owners contention. General J. M. Gomez is unquestionably a good colt, although he is inclined to be a loafer. Kis trainer, William McDaniel, is in love with the son of Hessian and asserts that when the youngsters begin to go over a long distance of ground General J. M. Gomez will show his true worth. " Star Voter is held highly oytrai ricf "Hi GrBeHwell. He is particularly a good eoit in the toft going and, while he has not been raced much, having only started five times, winning three races, he has added nearly 0,000 to the winnings of Commander J. K. L. Ross. Touch Me Not was heralded as a top-notcher when he defeated a band of good two-year-olds in the Great, American Stakes at Aqueduct on July 3, but in his succeeding start in the Tremont Stakes he got off badly and was soundly beaten, finishing last. Since then, Touch Me Not has not started. This is the race in which Inchcape beat his opponents by seven lengths. Finishing second to Inchcape was H. P. Whitneys Broomspun, which many considered Mr. Whitneys best two-year-old, but he has failed to earn brackets to date, although he only started but once after his defeat by Inchcape. Moody and Exodus are two other colts in the H. P. Whitney stable, which have shown recent good form and, while neither of them seem to come right up to the top mark, they are undoubtedly more than useful colts. Hildur, the Star Shoot colt, which J. K. L. Ross recently bought from John E. Madden, is most promising and, although winning only one race out of five starts, he has shown much improvement and may be heard from later, Jefferson Livingstons consistent colt, Oriole, is to be reckoned with. He is at his best in the soft going and it is doubtful whether there are many youngsters who can beat him over a muddy track. This colt has shown some fine races, in his class, and he may be just a little higher notch than rated. Among the fillies, H. P. Whitneys Prudery is placed first because she had won her -first ihrcc starts in a manner that suggested future greatness, and her only defeat by her stable companion Tryster is not held against her, as she was pressing him hard at the end. Mr. Whitney has another filly Crocus in his stable, which has won both her races. For the largest money-winning two.-year-old filly of the year, Careful leads the others. The little daughter of Wrack Mindful is a real racer. Starting early in the year she has won :iine races, second once and unplaced once. She won in stakes and purses for her owner, W. J. Shimon, 2,491. Nancy Lee is another filly which has recently shown to be in the front ranks of the filly division. Her last triumph was in the United Hotel Stakes at Saratoga when she defeated a band of good colts, including General J. M. Gomez, Black Servant, Registrar, Oriole and others. Ten-Lec, which runs in the colors of the Foreign stable, is a sister to Embroidery, Paddy Whack, Lace and others, is another filly which should last well. In her first start she ran green, but in her two successive starts she won easily from some fairly good youngsters- , Here are the ratings of the twelve best colts and eight best fillies of the eastern division: COLTS.
