HANOVERS GRANDSON IN FRANCE OVERSIGHT ADMIRABLY QUALIFIED TO CARRY ON THE FAMOUS LINE DESCENDING FROM GLENCOE THROUGH VANDAL, HINDOO, HANOVER AND HALMA By EXILE Never should I presume to diagnose the "horse sickness" from which the breeders-are now suffering,, that of Hanover extermination, .without suggesting the remedy. Truly, Great Britain still lives, but Great Britain, cannot go it alone and must needs have aid if the line of Hanover is to be saved; there-: fore, it may-. be well enough for breeders here to cast their eyes aeross the seas to France, where Hanovers son Halma attained to much success -as a sire, and in Oversight has sired one which is himself; meeting witlr good success as a sire. Oversight was more than a good race horse, winning three races as a two-year-old,, including Prix de la Salamandria, beating Verdun. The following season Oversight won live of- his eight starts, among them his wins Prix Lagrange, finishing ahead of Verdun; Prix Daru, Prix la Rochette, 30,000 francs, and Prix Lupin, 40,000 francs, from a good field, and also ran third to Verdun for the French Two Thousand. As a four-year-old Oversight won four of his eight races in which he took part and 2-16,530 francs, his winning races included that season Prix du President de la Kepubliquc, of a distance approximately one and one-half miles, from the Oaks winer Marsa, Aveu, Ossian and the French Derby winner Sea Sick. From this it may readily be seen that Oversight could win in the best of company over a distance of ground, and a glance at his pedigree is evidence that he is also an unusually well-bred horse. Halma, Oversights -sire, combines in his pedigree the blood of four of the best horses, Glencoe, Bonnie Scotland, Leamington and Australian, ever imported to this country. Also .there are to be found in Halmas pedigree frequent infusions of the Diomed Herod strain via Lexington, Brawners Eclipse, Bcrtrand, Ann ,Iniiis, daughter of American Eclipse, and Sumpter. Halma traces on, his dams side to Delancys Cub mare, which is, of course, a member of the Layton Barb No. 4 family, and to this Cub mare trace many of the best horses ever bred in this country. In all, the pedigree of Hanovers sou Halma leaves little to be desired. "What of Oversights dam, First Sight? Good horses have been and are bred more frequently on the blending of the blood plan than by any other known system of mating, and Oversight is one of these. First Sight is one of the top-heavy English Eclipse mares, a daughter of Isinglass, which you may remember also sired Lady Lightfoot, dam of Prince Palatine, and is another well-bred, non-winning mare, which, on account of her breeding, is of use as a brood mare. Nandino, dam, of First Sight, to the cover of St. Simon, bred St. Bris, winner of the "Ccsarewitch as a three-year-old, and the Alexandra Plate the following season. St. Bris was sent from England to France, there, to score no small measure of success as a sire. Oversight, is a member of the Seculsion Hermit branch of the No. 5 family, and all this is good, and Oversight is destined for further and even more complete success as a sire. So much, then, for this well-bred, good race horse of Hanover descent Which, I hope, will live long .to perpetuate the name and fame of his grandsire. For some reason the breeders of France seem to be more appreciative of and to value more highly the Herod strain than do the breeders of any other country. It is due to the energies of the French that the lines of Thormauby through Le Saucy and Flying Dutchman, by way of his sous and grandsons, are going concerns today, and now it would appear that it is to France also that we must look for the much to be desired Hanover salvation. Bather a slap in the face this, I take it, for breeders on this side 6f tiie -Atlantic, who in their shame, are willing to permit this splendid brood mare line to be swept aside. Brood marcs there must be, and none better, if any so good, as those of Hanover descent, as witness the breeding of the Kentucky Derby winners of the past nine years. Just why so little attention is paid to the brood mure phase of the subject is rather hard to understand. The lists of good producing mares, as published in Daily Racing Form some two months since, are sufficient evidence that nothing but the blood really counts in a brood mare. I may also say- that the. winning brood mare sire lists, the conception, of course, filched from Loudon, are also a great assistance in reckoning up the pros and cons of brood mare success. Therefore, now that Oversight has demonstrated his capability as a sire, would it not be to the advantage of the breeders of bloodstock in this country if some son of his was imported for use as a sire especially for the purpose of carrying on the splendid brood mare line of Glencoe V , viriK n 0 Vandal 12 H , Hindoo 24 j Vr1K iHymcnia 20 E bay, 1878 j Lexington ...12 H V ". .
