ONE OF THE WESTERN CRA CKS BELIEVE IDLE HOUR, E R. BRADLEY1 S CUNARD FILLY;, WHICH IS TO MEET THE BEST OF THE EASTERN TWO-YEAR-OLDS AT SARATOGA By EXILE How good is Miss Muffins? for everything, in a western racing way, seems to hinge on this. Second; ran Miss Muffins to Hit of White for the Debutante and second again to Believe Idle Hour in the Clip-petta, only to be beaten right at the end after having set a sizzling pace, almost from the hop-off. To the victress Believe Idle Hour, however, belong the spoils, and this chestnut daughter of Cunard must be possessed of high quality, for with but limited racing education she was able to come from behind, respond to urging and beat, in the running of the Clipsetta, the flying pacemaker Miss Muffins, and this is a performance indicative of more than average racing merit. To Believe Idle Hour, a home-bred daughter of Cunard and the fast though somewhat erratic Love-not, by Voter, I was introduced in her yearling days at Idle Hour, and as I then remember her she was a Ally of good size and substance and one which then gave promise of developing into something of better than ordinary racing merit. Cunard, sire of Believe Idle Hour, is, of course, a lineal descendant of Bend Or, and one which, although he has never sent forth a colt or filly of top-hole class, could always be relied upon to furnish plenty of winners, and his dam, Lucania, by the New Zealander, Sir Modrcd, one of the best colored bays it has ever been my lot to see, a champion in his homeland, as witness his successes in the Canterbury Jockey Club Cup, Duncdin Champagne Stakes, Dunedin Cup, etc., and 911 his being ferried across to Australia won the Great Metropolitan over the Kandwick course at Sydney. . Sir Modrcd, as you know, was bought to stand for service at his Ranchb del Paso Stud by the late James B. Haggin, where he proved himself well worthy of his ancestry and feats on the turf in that he once topped the winning sire list in 1894. Traducer, Sir Modreds sire, as far as 1 am aware, never won a, race, but this did not stop him in the land of his adoption from turning out no less than nine winners, 1807-1881, of the Canterbury Jockey Club Derby, and Traducer, a double Herod horse and a member of the outside Bruce Lowe family No. 20. Cunard is a member of the No. 6 family and his maternal ancestress, Silver, by the Belsize Arabian, and from this family the Bruce Lowe antagonists please take notice, no really prominent sire in any number of years, bar Old Man in the Argentine, has come.. In fact, this Silver family here in the United States, though most productive of winners, is notorious for the non-success of its male members as sires, and this no opinion or conclusion of mine own, but fact as collected from turf history. , Cunard, as might have been expected, on account of his feminine breeding, is now beginning to attain recognition as a brood mare sire, for in his veins flows the blood of Ormonde, Bend Or, Macaroni, Scottish Chief, Sir Modred, Wild Dayrell, Sweetmeat and Lexington. Love-not, dam of Believe Idle Hour, and also of Blind Baggage, was, in her racing days, a fast, though somewhat erratic Ally, running second to Bashti for the Spinawayaf ter having had a bit of a romp all on her own, and is by Voter, a sire which is coming on apace as a brood mare sire, from the fact that he is of Hermit descent, his dam, Mavourueen, by the extra good Matchem brood mare sire Barcaldine, and also that he is a member of the. Sunflower branch of the "No. 1 family. Truelove brings in the Castleton touch by way of her sire, Commando, another Sulvator, if you, please, of the H.M.E. breed, and so to Citronella, which is, as is Cunard, a number sixer, by St. Simon. On account of her double-six breeding, if Believe Idle Hour were a colt, I should never-look for success as a sire, but being a filly, I see no reason why she should not jii "the coming years succeed well as a .bropd marc,. but ere this, it is to be hoped, she may win another success in the popular colors of her qwner and breeder, Mr. E. 11.
