BUCHAN THE ENGLISH CUP HORSE LORD ASTORS ECLIPSE STAKES WINNER OF ROYAL LINEAGE AND HONEST AND TENACIOUS IN RACING PERFORMANCE SOUGHT BY AMERICAN BREEDERS FOR SERVICE HERE By EXILE To the best of my recollection I am due to offer the pedigree of that excellent English horse, Buclian, nnd having done so, submit it for the inspection and absorption of the student of pedigree readers of Dally Racing Form. Only last year a prominent eastern trainer of my acquaintance asked me to name two or three English horses which, in my opinion, would be of use as sires in this country. Among the four chosen was Sunstars son, Buchan, and on a reconsideration of the matter a letter was written to my trainer friend stating that Buchan was the best of the lot and that no mistake could possibly be made in bringing him over, if by any chance his owner, Lord Astor, could be induced to spare him. Buchan, as a youngster, won three of his four races and 4,020, and, as a thrce-ycar-old, took his part in eight races, running second to The Panther for the Two Thousand, second again to Grand . Parade in the Derby nnd third to Keysoe for the St. Leger. Besides these partially unsuccessful attempts, Buchan won outright the Eclipse Stakes nnd four races and 8,200. This year not one has finished ahead of him. To lead off, Buchan won the Vase at Chester and finished first, though subsequently disqualified, for the Ascot Gold Cup, and has since again won the rich Eclipse at Sandown Park. A pretty good book record tills, it is not? Buchan is only a medium-size horse of the Bonnie Scotland type, but sound, and a trier, as his book form would indicate. Now, then, as I was writing only the other day of the Bonnie Scotlands, adaptability to the prevailing style of round-thc-turn racing is necessary for success in this country. "Like father, like son." Buchan can be relied upon to sire medium-size horses, those handy on the turn and possessed of all that wonderful flight of speed, the main asset of the Sundridge tribe. Which speed, however, not infrequently in this case, is associated with an -inability to long withstand the hard knocks which come with strong training. Buchans book form tells us that; unlike many others of his breed, lie is sound and game a cup horse, in fact. Sunstar, a wonder in his way, won the Derby on three legs and a swinger, but was possessed to a marked degree of the Sundridge speed inheritance, though his stamina, on account of his quick retirement, was not proven, for the easy Surrey gradients are no true test of a horses staying powers. Speed inheritance has Sunstar both through his sire, Sundridge, and his dam, Doris, dam also of the One Thousand Guineas and Oaks winner. Princess Dorrie; by the Wokingham Stakes winner, Loved One. Sunstar is just another bred to the initial plan of mating, B to H, for Loved One is by the Cambridgeshire winner, See Saw, and so on back through. Buccaneer, the Derby winner, Wild Dayrell, Ion, Cain, Paulowitz, Sir Paul, Sir Peter, Highflyer to Herod. Doris, dam of Sunstar, is a member of Diversion, by Defence branch, of the No. 5 family, from which come so many good winners, ,and her dam, Lauretta, by that good brood mare sire, St. Leger and Ascot Gplil Cup winner, Petrarch, sire of Meddlers dam. Busybody, and Petrarchs data, Laura, by the speed sire Orlando, Just a bundle of speed is Sunstar, and this, splendidly balanced in Buchans pedigree by the introduction of. the stout-staying blood, of Musket, by way of Trenton, sire of Tdrpoint, whose daughter, Hamoaze, is the dam of Buchan and Torpoint, as is Buchan himself a member of the all-conquering Agnes family. Comparatively few members of the Musket line have been brought to the United States, but the few that have been landed here have done a world of good. Maxim was a complete success as long as he lasted as a sire when Mr. Hnggin had him. Midge, by Trenton, is" the dam of Luke McLuke; Colonial, nlso by Trenton, the dam of Hessian, Mary Davis and Air Man; LotaWanna, another daughter of Trenton, the dam of Gladiator, and Trentons son, Knight Errant, the sire of that earnest record breaker, the ever-ready Roamer, and the same Musket strain crops up in the pedigree of Escoba, Yankee Girl and Running Water, their ancestress being imported Ricochet. As is well understood in Australia, the quiet, business-like strain of Musket acts as an admirable offse to all the fire and brimstone of the St. Simons, and why not the same result here? Besides there being a scarcity of the blood of Musket In this country there are also but few members of the Agnes family to be found, but what is lacking in quantity is more than made up. in quality, for does not the leading sire, Broomstick, come within the Agnes fold 7 The lists of famous brood mares, as published in Daily Racing Form recently, are pretty conclusive evidence of the truth of the old saying, "in breeding to a horse you breed to the individual, in a mare to the blood." Tremendous race mare that she was. Sceptre has never bred a son or daughter at all in the same street as herself, yet, breeding to the blood, as formerly, still brings about the best results, for Buchans third ancestress; is none other than Persimmons classic daughter. Sceptre, whose female offspring though of little racing account themselves, are by the best sires obtainable, and the blood is once again making its presence felt. Sceptre herself is an exceptionally well-bred mare by Persimmon,; and has for a. dam Ornament, sister to Ormonde, and by tiie Derby winner Bend Or, got from the Cup mare, Lily Agnes, by the best brood mare sire I know, Macaroni. Hence, if there be anything in breeding. Judged In any manner -you please, individuality, malte, size aud shape, breeding, adaptability. conformation, honesty of purpose, H.M.E. blend, an outcross for all the rest, in Buchau, you must" have a horse predestined for success as a sire, especially so in the United States.
