SMALL FIELDS AT BELMONT Blue Laddie Last of Three Because of Bleeding. Teddy B. Takes Mineola Stakes Grey Lag Wins in a Close Finish of Six. NEW YORK, X. Y., September 8. It was rather a small but enthusiastic crowd that came out to Belmont Park today to see a mediocre racing program decided. The fields were small and absolutely devoid of high-class horses. The feature race, the Mineola Selling Stakes, brought only four ordinary two-year-olds to the post. The winner turned up in Teddy R., the second choice, with Santa Claus second and Bodanky third. Squaw Man, the favorite, was inclined to run out all the way and was last when- the race was finished. Teddy R. ran under restraint until fifty yards out, when he came on to win by two lengths. A strong wind was blowing directly up the stretch, which made the running time slow. Three faced the starter in the Seaside, a selling handicap at one mile and a quarter, which resulted in one of the biggest upsets of the meeting when Blue Laddie, at 1 to 3, finished last, with Le Glorieux, at long odds, an easy winner and Biff Hang second. Blue Laddie seemed all over the winner when coming into the stretch, but he bled and suddenly dropped back. Blue Laddie made all the pace, with Le Glorieux his closest attendant. The latter won easily after the accident to Blue Laddie. Biff Bang lacked speed. The- second race, r for" maiden Jumpers, brought with it- the easy victory of Frank B., the favorite, and a series of mishaps. Elmer Johnson fell at the ninth obstacle, but his jockey remounted and the. horse finshed the course, receiving third money. Wljiooski came to grief at the last jump. He did a complete "cropper" and fell on jockey Ilanna, who was badly shaken up. The opening dash, for two-year-olds at five and a half furlongs, developed into a close finish for the first six. Grey Lag got the decision from Qltecreek, a 20 to 1 shot. The latter just nosed Star Voter out of second money. Star Voter, coupled with Baby Grand as the J. K. L. Ross entry, was favorite and led until in the closing strides. Queereek ran a good race. The Bohemian was the medium of heavy backing on the strength, of a recent fast trial. The fleet filly Careful was a contender all the way, but her weight told at the finish. It was the first brackets for Grey Lag, a Futurity eligible. R.- I. Miller has sold Duchess Lace to J. E. Wide-ner for breeding purposes. He is reported to have received 5,000 for the mare. C. A. Applegate has presented the Breeding Bureau with the horse Mariister Toi. M. Lowenstein has bought Royal Duck from G. D. "Widener on private terms. . G. Peterson claimed Tan II. out of the fiftli race Tuesday for ,475. Sea Queen also was claimed in the same race by J. F. OBrien for ,300. Gipsy Lad, which ran second in the third race Tuesday, was claimed by J. J. Murphy for S4.250. Dewey Eve, which was heavily backed in the opening dash Tuesday and was the victim of a bumping at the start, was claimed by W. II. Cong-don for ,505.
