RISE AND PROGRESS OF RACING FLOURISHING CONDITION OF THE SPORT IN THIS COUNTRY SEEN IN EVER INCREASING MONETARY RETURNS DURING THE PAST EIGHT YEARS The bulk of racing in the United States is now confined to four states New York, Kentucky, Maryland and Louisiana. In the matter of money distribution, the Empire State, with its large number of tracks and long racing season, is the leader. In 1919 both Kentucky and Maryland made it interesting for the leader and are again making a strong bid for the honors this year. A significant fact in the progress of Kentucky and Maryland is that their rapid rise came soon after the adoption of the pari-mutuel method of wagering. The consolidation of rival interests in the Blue Grass State into the newly-formed Kentucky Jockey Club has been another stepping stone in the progress of that nursery of tjie thoroughbred, so much so it appears now that Kentucky will lead them all this year. In the following tabulation, showing the money distribution by states since 1913, the flourishing condition of the turf is seen in the ever-iucreasing figures from year to year: United. States Racing: Revenues Since Ui:j. State. 1913. 1914. 1915. 1916. 1917. 1918. 1919. 1920. Totals.
