The Champagne Stakes, at .seven-eighths of a mile over the straight course, featured the program at Belmont Park this afternoon. Grey Lag ruled the choice. The Star Shoot colts recent races warranted the respect shown him by tlie oralizers. ? Banksia, G. A. Cochrans filly, was an added starter, with jockey W. Kelsay having the mount. Groy Lag scored easily from the five others, with Banksia second and Our Flag third. The time for the race was 1:24, one-fifth of a second slower than Cleopatra won the race in last year. The Southampton Handicap for marcs three years old and over brought seven to the post, with Alphee ruling a slight favorite over Enfilade at the close of operations. The later proved the winner and her performance stamps her as being right at the top of her form, as she was giving away substantial weight concessions to everything in the race. Enfilade followed Alphee close up" to the stretch bend from where she came on to win easily. La Rablee, which had been practically left, ran a good race by closing a big gap nnd taking second place. Ballet Dancer II., a long sliot.. vvasthirjd. Bellsolar ami Lunetta were outrun "all file way." ."Alphee quit unexpectedly" and "lier pace was too bai"to be true. - - Natural Bridge repeated his good performance of last Saturday when he defeated a fair band of platers in the second race at one mile and a sixteenth. Natural Bridge was1 saved to the stretch bend, where he came through next to the rail and, coming on with a rush, took the lead and won by two lengths. . Mars Mouse, the favorite, was the early pacemaker, but he had nothing left to withstand tlie challenge of Paddy Dear in the stretch and had to lie content with third place. S. C. Hildreths Lord Brighton, which failed the talent in his last race, made good in easy fashion in the Dunton Handicap, the opening dash of the day, but at short odds. Afternoon and Salvestra alternately set the pace until at the eighth post, where Lord Brighton came with a rush and won with ease. Salvestra was second, two lengths in advance of Afternoon. Royce Rools showed scant speed. Jockey F. Coltileti came from Havre de Grace to ride yesterday. He had the mount on Arethusa in the third race and Broom Spun in tlie Champagne Stakes. J Simon Healy, who has accepted the position of trainer for the stable of Senor A. n. Diaz, was at Belmont Park yesterday. He leaves for Havre de Grace Thursday to take charge of the Cuban turfmans horses. The stable of E. R. Bradley was shipped to Kentucky yesterday, where it will be campaigned during the fall racing season. The Wickliffe stable, formerly owned by James Corrigan and Price McKinney. will get ,000 out of the Futurity, won by Step Lightly, that amount being set aside for the breeder and nominator of the winner. Tripping, the dam of Step Lightly, was sold at the dispersal sale of the Wickliffe stable, held at Lexington in February, 1918. She was at the time of her sale in foal to Ultiinus and Step Lightly was the produce. Miss Daingerfield and S. Ross of the Haylands stud, paid ,400 for Tripping.
