DOKHUYSENS TURF HEROES Great Horses Sent to the Races by the Deceased Figure in French Racing Finasseur and Sardanapale His Best. The death at Deauville, France, on August 15 of trainer James dOkhuysen brings to a close the career of a man who, although comparatively young he was only 52 had been a notable figure on the French turf for the past thirty years. It was with Finasseur that he became famous, that great horse winning in succession the Grand Prix du Jockey Club, the Grand Prix de Paris and the Prix du President de la Republique. His subsequent successes were numerous. In 1907 he had a great year with Verdun and later with Faucheur, Ossian and Sardanapale, all owned by Baron Maurice de Rothschild. In that year Verdun won the Prix de Saint Cloud, the Prix Boiard, La Poulle dEssai. the Grand Prix de Paris and the Prix du President de la Republique. Faucheur started out by winning the Grand Criterion, the Prix Lagrange and the Prix Hocqnart, but his career was unfortunately interrupted at the commencement of his third year. Ossian, which improved as he grew older, like his grandsire, Le Sancy, placed to his credit the Prix du Conseil Municipal and the Prix du President de la Republique. Tlie exploits of Sardanapale are recent history, among his successes being the Prix Lagrange, Prix du Jockey Club, Grand Prix de Paris, Prir du President de la Republique and the Prix Eugene Adam. A patient, keen student of everything pertaining to tlie development of the thoroughbred, DOkhuysen displayed during his long career the finest professional acumen and his premature death is a distinct loss to the French turf.
