ST. CHARLGOTE WINNER Carries Gwyn Tompkins Colors to Victory in Chevy Chase, Panoply Defeats Crank and War Marvel Juvenile Sprint to Gen. J. M. Gomez. LAUREL, Md., October 12. St. Charlcote, saddled by C. L. Snyder for G. R. Tompkins and well ridden by jockey S. Bush, won the 1920 renewal of the Chevy Chase, the first of the big steeplechase stakes for decision at the fall meeting of the Maryland State Fair. Elysian, from the stable of Mrs. F. Ambrose Clark, finished second and Flare third. Westminster, a stablemate of Elysinn, and Royal Arch completed the field. The Chevy Chase was at about two and a half miles. The winners portion of the ,000 added money amounted to ,856. The field of five which started was dispatched to a good sendof f and engaged in a stirring conr test which was not decided until in the closing strides. Elysian made the early running, followed-closely by Royal Arch, with Westminster and Flare alternating: in third and fourth positions. St. Charlcote,. under stout restraint, was always kept ten or twelve lengths away until the real racing began. Beginning the last half mile Flare made an effort for the lead, but tired slightly under his impost. Royal Arcli blundered at the fourteenth, fence and fell. Elysian appeared to have disposed of all competition, but, rounding into the stretch for the final drive, Bush brought St. Charlcote up on the inside and, stealing Into the lead before Borgan, astride Elysian, realized his danger, held on gamely under punishment to gain the decision by a neck. Elysian was coming again and would have reversed the margin in a few more strides. It was for a ride upon St. Charlcote Saturday that C. Smoot was suspended pending investigation by the stewards of the meeting. Bush rode St. Charlcote in similar fashion in the early stages of the days race as Smoot did in Saturdays contest, sitting heavily against him until the final eighth. An excellent card of flat races supported the timber-topping feature. The best of these were both at three-quarters, for two-year-olds and three-year-olds respectively. The sprint for the older division was a handicap, in which Panoply, from the stable of H. P. Whitney, triumphed easily over Crank and War Marvel. Carrying 115 pounds the Peter Pan filly was saved by jockey Eddie Ambrose until straightened out in the stretch, where she came around the leaders and won going away. General J. M. Gomez, carrying the colors of A. II. Diaz, won the juvenile sprint in much the same manner as Panoply accounted for the other dash. Fairbrother waited in a contending position witli the Hessian colt until the field hvaded down the stretch, then came on the outside and took an easy lead in the last eighth to win1 by a length from Charity, which was two lengths better than Miss Rankin. Lough Swilly, racing in the colors of. B. B. McLean, made a runaway of a five and a half furlongs sprint for two-year-old maidens, which opened the card. Merchant Marine, a Friar Rock colt from the J. H. Rosseter string, came from behind to prove his superiority over the others. Jockey Simpson has been suspended for the remainder of the meeting for reporting late for an engagement in the first race yesterday and for being under the influence of liquor when he did. put in an appearance. He is denied the privilege of the course during his- suspension. Following is a decision handed down by the stewards in the Smoot inquiry: "In the matter of the investigation of jockey Snioots riding of the horse St. Charlcote on October 9 the stewards, after taking evidence from various sources and viewing the running of St. Charlcote on this date, have arrived at the following conclusions: "G. R. Tompkins, owner, is not under suspicion. "Jockey Smoot, though using judgment, attempted to follow orders, and is relieved from further suspension. The horse St. Charlcote is believed to have been stimulated on October 9 and normal on October 12. His entry will be refused pending further investigations. "GEORGE BROWN. JR., "FRANK J. BRYAN, "THOMAS CLYDE."
