REGALO IN WINNING FORM Defeats Sterling ih a Fast Mile and an Eighth. Lucky B. Takes Another Race Small Fields, Close Finishes and Fine Weather Prevail. BY J. L. DEMPSEr. LATONIA,. Ky., October 12. Regalo, which in her last previous race was almost thrown, came into her own this afternoon when she took a good hand into camp, including Sterling, in the mile and an eighth.. ,500 Columbus Handicap, featuring the card. Her victory was decisive and her time fast. Sterling landed in second place and Matinee Idol third. Pastoureau and Under Fire, a pair dominating the early running, tired fast in the stretch and brought up in the rear. Sterling was the favored one in the race, but Lunsford permitted him to drop too far back in the first three-quarters, the stretch sprint finding him in last place. He responded well when ridden hard, but Regalo was not to be denied and she maintained the lead she had taken .after, wearing Matinee,,; Idol and .PaKiQunau,,doniK SmaU, fields contested in most of the" dashes this afternoon, accounting for some thighly excited racing. Surprises developed in some of the dashes; the. .most noteworthy one in this respect being the defeat of High Cost in the initial race, Marjorie Hyrtes winning from him by a scant head. Maysyille, grouped with others in the field, outstayed Miss Prosperity for the purse in the second jace, bringing together an ordinary band of maidens. Lucky B. won from Docod after a spirited stretch duel in the mile and a quarter race. Another "fielder" finished in the van when Apple Jack II. scurried away from the others in the stretch in the running of the fourth race to win from Rifle and A. X. Akin. Todays attendance was surprisingly large and the sport benefited extensively by the summer conditions that ruled. Dancing Spray was claimed out of the opening race by H. Field for ,500. Jockey Merimee was suspended for ten days by the stewards in the seventh race for cutting across In front of the others soon after the start. Trainer James Itqwe, who contemplates sending here some of Harry Payne Whitneys best to race In the more valuable stakes to be run for during the remainder of the meeting-, sent word here that the horses would be shipped to this section as soon hb suitable cars could be secured for their transfer. The horses are now at Laurel. Trainer Max Hirsch contemplates sending one of his charges here to run in the Latoniu Cup race at two and a quarter miles. Jewett Sliouse, assistant United States treasurer, was a visitor this afternoon and took a keen interest in the sport. Congressman Arthur B. Bouse was another distinguished visitor who enjoyed the racing. James B. Brown and Col. Andrew Veiinie, two of the foremost stockholders in the Kentucky Jockey Club, came over from Louisville to witness the racing. Lloyd Gentry was the buyer of Angon, instead of C. W. Clark, as reported.
