REMOUNT BREEDING REPORT One Hundred and Fiftysix Stallions Now in Use Foals This Spring Number 347 WASHINGTON D C April S Major C L Scott chairman of the Breeding Committee of the American Remount Association the organization of army and civilian experts which has undertaken the work of general purpose horse improvement particularly the type available for cavalry an ¬ nounces that 1IH stallions will bo used in the cam ¬ paign paignMost Most of these horses are now at their stations and lheir custodians have reported to headquarters their belief that an average of thirtyfive mares will be bred to each horse Of the total number of stallions distributed 130 are thoroughbreds seven standard hreds six each of the Morgan saddle and Arabian types and one hackney hackneyAVIipii AVIipii the service was organized there was a dis ¬ position on the part of some of the breeders in rural communities to regard it as an invasion of the rights of the individual breeder but Major Scott dissipatedIn says that this impression has been dissipated In placing our stallions we have been most care ¬ ful not to give the impression that we intended to interfere with draft horse or mule breeding said Major Scott Such interference was of course never contemplated The raising of suitable draft horses and mules is of course just as important to the army as the light horse The production of the draft horse has received greater encouragement from commercial sources and has not fallen into a state of such low production as is the case in light horse breeding For this reason active help is not needed in draft horse production but we wish to assure breeders of this type that we do not wish to interfere with them but stand ready to assist and encourage them in every possible way Major wayMajor Scott has just returned from Fort Reno Okla where he saw eighty yearlings all without a blemish and of the right sort lie says they are the best the federal government has bred to date So far this spring 317 foals have been born at the Hi mount depots and the breeding season is in full swing at Front Royal Va and Fort Reno
