DEATH OF AN OLD TIME TURFMAN From Memphis comes word that George C. Bennett died at his home at Ridgeway, Tenn., last Tuesday. A stroke of paralysis a couple of years back left him an invalid ever since. In the days when racing flourished in Chicago Mr. I.ennett was a familiar figure on the race tracks of the East and West. A bank cashier in his younger manhood, he became attracted by racing and in time became a highly successful owner, breeder and bookmaker. Possessed of many high-class racers in his years of activity, Aladdin was one of his especial favorites, which came near to realizing one of his cherished ambitions by running third to Wyeth and Lueien Appleby in the American Derby of 19i2 at Washington Park. His splendid mare Dishabille was another that he regarded highly and with good reason. Abe Frank, a magnificent son of Hanover, won the Tennessee Derby for him and became a successful sire later on in Texas. He was a well liked man and there are many who will hear of his passing on with real regret.
