BIG CROWD AT CLEVELAND i About 10,000 People See Franklin Defeat Breeze in Main Race of Program. CLEVELAND, Ohio, October 29. To Stuart Polk went the credit of providing the winner of the feature attraction at Maple Heights Park this afternoon when Franklin took the measure of Breeze and Fornovo in the Press Handicap. Franklin was skillfully handled by jockey Elmer Fator. He was under restraint, while Crumpsall set a dazzling pace, made his move at an opportune time approaching the turn for home and held his opponents safe in the final test. Franklin covered the one and one-eighth miles in 1:53, which is remarkable over a track that was only constructed during the past month. Undoubtedly the greatest throng that ever witnessed an afternoons racing provided by the thoroughbreds at a local course was in attendance. It was estimated that the crowd numbered 10,000, the accommodations of the new plant being taxed to capacity. Rex Gaiety scored his third victory during the meeting here when he won from War Smoke in a driving finish in the fifth race. Fly Home barely lasted to win the concluding dash by the smallest possible margin after another keen stretch struggle. The other winners scored with something to spare. Owing to lack of proper identification, Clare-meter was not permitted to start in the second race. The filly was entered in the name of M. Moreto as owner and C. W. Johnson as trainer, but it is doubtful whether the filly brought to the paddock was the real Claremeter, which is a mean actor under all conditions. A carload of sixteen horses, including the strings of O. Nibbs and C. S. Wilsou, arrived last night from Montreal. Word leached here today from New Kensington. Pa., that Casetas, owned by G. Brown, ran through the fence yesterday afternoon, unseating her rider in the fifth race, and injured herself so badly that she died a few minutes latert
