SURF RIDERS TRIUMPH Easily Defeats Chatterton and Braeclalbane in Mile Dash. Jockey Heupel Rides Three Winners, Including Two for Gallaher Bros. LOUISVILLE, Ky., September 5, Another feature fell to Montfort Jones when his Surf Rider scored from some crack three-year-olds that furnished the contest in the mile handicap, including Chatterton and Braedal-bane. The latter pair followed him home in the order named. The time was excellent 1 :37 and probably bears out the belief of trainer Kay Spence that Surf Rider is Rockministers master at a mile. Surf Riders early progress in the race was anything but encouraging to his numerous supporters, for Braedalbane dominated the running, with Chatterton in closest pursuit, though under restraint, and the pair were a good five lengths in advance of Surf Rider when the stretch turn was reached. Though supposedly disliking to go a longer distance than the customary sprinting dash Braedalbane held on fairly well and it was only in the last eighth that he began giving way to Chatterton. The latter flashed momentarily" into a lead, but also finding the distance a bit beyond him tired perceptibly and Surf Rider, continuing with a bold even stride, passed his tiring rivals in the last fifty yards to win drawing clear by a length. Chatterton was an easy second, with Braedalbane a good ways ahead of Pindar Peel. Bill and Coo, the only other starter, was lost between the half-mile ground and the ! finish. Todays weather was more of the ideal autumn variety, cooling breezes tempering the suns heat. INTEREST AND SPECULATION KEEN. Though a noticeable decrease in attendance is noticed from that of former years, still a goodly gathering showed interest in the sport and the betting volume was of satisfactory standard. The speculators fared in good style and managed to land on most of the winners. Close finishes again featured the racing, most of the dashes resulting in the leaders engaging in spirited drives to score. Gallaher brothers horses figured in a double victory during the afternoon. Their crack Indian Trail contributed and incidentally verified the sound judgment of many close observers who hold him in high regard. He was an overwhelming favorite and justified the support accorded him by winning as his rider pleased. He possesses extreme speed at the barrier and indicated by his showing today that he can carry his speed over a good distance, but seemed inclined to loaf and his rider had to rouse him some at one period of the stretch run. He is eligible to the rich Jockey Club Stakes, which will have its decision next Saturday. Whirl was the secondary contributor of the Gallaher brothers success. She was also a pronounced favorite and never gave her backers much concern, for she led for the entire race and won under restraint. Jockey Heupel figured extensively in the afternoons racing, for in addition to piloting the Gallaher brothers pair of winners he also had the mount on Brotherly Love, which triumphed in the mile .and a sixteenth that engaged five of the higher grade platers in these parts. Brotherly Love raced in his best form and he had to to defeat the steady going Lady Astor and Cherry Tree. Sands of Pleasure was the disappointment in the race. It was expected that he would figure extensively in the result, but he was never a serious factor. SUCCESS FOR CAMDEN COLORS. Former Senator J. M. Camdens colors were carried to victory for the first time since the disastrous fire which wiped out practically all iiis racing stable. They were carried by Merle, in the three-quarters maiden race, which she won after a sharp drive from the Californian, Cruzern, with Vella K. in third place. There were many blood relatives to famous racers in the dash, but most of them performed poorly. Williams Brothers Nurture upset calculations in the final dash by leading for the entire race and beating Merchant and Matinee Idol. Locust Leaves was an intended good thing here, but she quit badly after reaching the stretch. The infirm Pimlico was one of the choices in this race, but ho performed poorly. "Bud" Fisher will bo an arrival from New York with a party o friends next Thursday to witness the running of the Jockey Club Stakes, in which his Cartoonisc will be a starter. Assistant starter W. Hamilton had to ab sent himself from duty as a result of injuries he sustained in the fifth race yesterday. McDowell made, his first visit to Churchill Downs this year. He came from Lexington, where ho has been all summer. Several of the McDowell horses were start -jers during the afternoon, but failed to figure jto any extent in tho results. John C. Ferriss was an arrival from Wind-! sor, where he raced his own horses and those of George J. Long during the summer. Alex B. Gordon, trainer of the extensive jBud Fisher stable, was an arrival from New jYork this morning. He will supervise the saddling of Cartoonist in the 5,000 Jockey Club Stakes, to be run Saturday. Jockey W. Pool was -unseated from Willow jTree in the fourth race, but escaped with a shaking up. J. F. Peck, general manager of the Huntington, W.
