BELMONT PARK MUDDY Does Not Prevent the Scoring of Good Time in Races. r Nassau Wins Long Established Champagne Stakes and Leads All the Way. NEW YORK, N. Y., September 12. Nassau from the stable of Frederick Johnson, was the winner of the famous old Champagne Stake: down at Belmont Park today. This race had its first decision away back in 18G7 at Jerome Park and there has been few interruptions in its history, for this was the fifty-sevond rj newal. It was a seven-eighths dash and wa.-run over a track that was sloppy from a heavy rain that fell during the morning hours. It was worth ,050 to the winner. The track conditions had much to do with the decision of the race, for they favored Nassau greatly, while it was a distinct handicap to some of the starters. Miss Smith, from the stable of Walter M. Jeffords, raced to second place, while third money went to the Rancocas Stables Coeur de Lion. Eight raced and those declared-out were Cherry Vie, Heremon and Carol. The rain that f-iil during the forenoon had its effect on the attendance, although it was a large crowd that was on hand. Though the state of the traci was detrimental to the best sport, plenty oe. good horses were engaged during the aftei -noon and the contests were thoroughly interesting. AWAY TO GOOD STAItT. Little time was lost at the barrier in the Champagne Stakes, and when it rose the horses left in good alignment, with Coeur de Lion just showing the way to Nassau, while both Miss Smith and Spot Cash were in close attendance. Nassau soon drew out from the others and Spot Cash, racing next to the rail, moved into second place, with Miss Smith a close third and galloping fast. Daniel was in fourth place, with William Tell fifth, Doughoregan sixth, and Coeur de Liou and High Prince bringing up the rear. Spot Cash raced along close on the heels of Nassau almost to the stretch turn, but there he tired and there was a general closing up back of the Johnson colt. But Nassau showed no signs of weakening, although Fairbrother was hand riding him to keep him at his task. Walls had taken to the inner rail with Daniel and for an instant he threatened, but it was only for an instant. "William Tell and Coeur de Lion were gaining on the outside, but Miss Smith was net losing ground and held them safe. At the end Nassau had something left to win by a length, while Miss Smith was two lengths before Coeur de Lfon, which in turn beat Daniel three parts of a length for third money. William Tell was a distant fourth, but he had no trouble about beating the tired Spot Cash home. The muddy track played havoc with the Great Neck Handicap when only three went to the pest. They were the Rancocas Stables Little Chief, Southern Cross and Devastation. That meant the scratching of Thunderclap, Exodus, John Paul Jones, Best Pal, Hephaistos and Pilgrim. The winner turned up in Southern Cross, but it was a race with a somewhat disappointing outcome when he was an easy winner in the slow time of 1:39, while the mares and fillies in the third dash raced the same distance in. just a fifth of a second slower. The start was a good one, but almost from the beginning Southern Cross outran the other two, whic Devastation was unable to keep up with the other two. Southern Cross raced into a good early lead and kept it At the head of the stretch Little Chief moved up slightly and as he did so Schuttinger went out a bit with Southern Cross and had him bearing slightly to the outside in the stretch. But it was not necessary, for Little Chief was not close enough to do any damage and Devastation was sliding about helplessly. SEQUJ3IS ODD PERFORMANCE. Sequel was the winner of the five and v half furlongs dash for two-year-olds tin: was the fifth offering and it was after she had a long but slow gallop in a breakaway that took her back to her stable. Littt Martz was scraped from her back at tno post and she jogged away up the chute, found the gap open and never stopped until she was heme. In the meantime "Itedcoat" Murray went after her and led her back to the gate There was no further delay and with the start Sequel was away in front and racing Dicks Daughter into defeat and saving ground next to the rail all the way, beat Great Lady and Dicks Daughter home. After having acted badly at .the post if. the first race, the entry of J. A. Harpers Care Free was ordered refused for the remainder of the meeting. George Petersons Winneconne found the going in her favor and left the post running fast in the mile for fillies and mares that was the second race. She dominated all the running to win easily. Chateaugay began slowly, but the others were away in good alignment. Lackawanna and Amanda Hoey were the first ones to chase after Winne-conne and for a time Lackawanna held to her, but before the stretch was reached the winner drew away and as Lackawanna tired Fator rushed Leghorn up on the outside. At the head of the stretch Leghorn was so close as to seem the winner, but "Winneconne had speed left and when Leghorn tired an eighth out "Winneconne came on to win easily, while Leghorn saved second place from Amanda Hoey, which outstayed the others. After the finish J. A. Coburn was again in evidence when he bid Winneconne up from an entered selling price of ,200 to ,700, but, like Opperman, she was protected and bought in for ,705. Opperman, from the Triple Springs Farm Stable, was a cantering winner of the opening three-quarters dash from a fairly speeay band of selling platers. While the track was covered with sloppy mud, he raced the distance in 1 :12. The race so impressed J. A Coburn that after the finish he raised Opperman from his entered price of ,500 to ,200. but he was protected and bought in for his owner by James Boden for ,205. The start was a bit straggling and Cav Free, Knight of the Heather, Valor and Dar Boiling had scant chance. Opperman wa away fast, but it was Blue Teal that was first to show the way, with Orcus in second place. Orcus was first of the leaders to tin and as he dropped back Sea Mint moved un on the inside. Before the stretch was reach-d Opperman had gone by Blue Teal and into a long lead. He was never afterwards even threatened and won pulled up. Blue Tce-. saved second place and Doughnut, after a long drive, outgamed Sea Mint to take the short end of the purse. The August Belmont entries for the stakes of the Queens County Jockey Club at Aqueduct were in some fashion lost in the mails. The making of the entries was proved to the satisfaction of the stewards and they were made eligible. The ones that were named for various engagements are Messenger, Diagram, Osprey, Mirabclle, How Fair and Rock Bottom.
