STOTO BEST IN THE MUD Triumphs Over Merrimac and Fair Gain in Thorncliffes Main Race. TORONTO, Ont., September 12. Favored by the soft going E. E. "Watsons Stoto had the best of his opponents at all stages of the Scarboro Handicap, the fifth and feature race at Thorncliffe Park this afternoon. At the end the son of Luke McLuke led Merrimac by a length, with Fair Gain in third place, which position the latter failed to improve throughout the running of the race. Gourmand was crowded into the fence at the first turn by Merrimac and his rider was forced lo yull up, after which he was a hopeless follower for the remainder of the race. The vji.iory of Stoto marked the sxcond success for the; "Watson stable during the afternoon. Oakling, running in the colors of the same qv:i, took the measure of the other Canadian-breds engaged in the second race after Beljoy during the early stages had threatened to make a runaway affair of it. Fair and Warmer was the victim of poor riding. She was taken back too far out of contention during the first quarter, only to finish with a belated rush. The Kenton Stable scored its fourth win during this meeting when Ardella annexed tVf. opening dash, which marked her maiden victory. It was only in the closing strides that the winner successfully overhauled Reformer, which had showed the way until the last fifty yards. Clos-ing with a well timed rush tl rough the stretch Betsinda overhauled the tiring Ablaze to capt.ire the third race after a spirited stretch struggle. After being outpaced by Topmost until well into the stretch Tulsa closed with good courage and captured the fourth race in a driving finish. Bees Wing and Joan of Arc also came from far back in the last quarter to earn brackets in their respective races. R. Pending has purchased American Soldier from T. Hodge and the horse made his initial appearance in the colors of his new owner in the concluding dash. The opining of the winter racing at Jefferson Park, New Orleans, has been set for November 25. It is probable that another winter meeting will be given at Mexico City, opening about the middle of January with an open ring.
