HAWTHORNES BIG MEETING Thirteen Days of Racing Tremendously Successful 0,000 Distributed. Tho Illinois Jockey Club proved that Chicago wants melng. The experimental meeting at Hawthorne from September 30 to October 11 was in every way a tremendous success, even beyond the most enthusiastic hopes of its promoters. There were thirteen days of racing, during which time seventy-eight races were decided and 0,000 distributed in purses. The daily average distribution amounted to ,153. While the horses taking part in the meeting were for the most part of the plater class, nevertheless they were evenly matched; and provided some fairly interesting racing. W. C. Weant and Cain and Sanford had the most pretentious string at the track and staged a battle royal for the leading honors. Although the Cain and Sanford horses won ten races, one more than to the credit of the Weant stable, the latter accounted for the most money. The Weant stable was 0,-350. while Cain and Sanfords was ,400. Harry B., with five straight victories and ,150 to his credit, was the outstanding star among the horses. J. B. Partridge saddled the greatest number of winners, eleven in all. One of the big features of the meeting was the wonderful riding of jockey 11 Petzoldt, who gained a warm place in the hearts of Chicago patrons of racing by his fearless and brilliant horsemanship. He had fifty-seven mounts and rode twenty-two winners for the excellent percentage of .37.
