ONTARIO TRACKS RETURNS Total Wagers on Various Courses 2,000,000 Less than Last Year Tax Held to Blame. TORONTO, Ont, October IS. The total amount bet on Ontario race tracks during the racing season of 1922 totaled 4,244,402, according to the Ontario government figures issued today. This is 2,000,000 less than in 1921, when 6,000,000 Avas wagered. This was the first year of racing under the 5 per cent imposed on wagers and the sum of ,212,220 has accrued to the government from the levy, while the usual daily license fee of ,500 has also been exacted from the operation of each course. The reduction on the amount wagered is attributed to this 5 per cent additional tax exacted by the government. The Ontario Jockey Club in the returns filed yesterday for its fall meeting admitted a loss of 7,000 on that period.
