SPEEDY LADY MADCAP i Scores Brilliant Victory Over Dr. Clark in Cleopatra Handicap. Granite Ware, Golden Crest and Paris Maid Winners in Thrilling Finishes. LATOXIA, Ky., October 19. Desha Breckinridges Lady Madcap accounted for the Cleopatra Mile Handicap of ,000 added, featuring todays card, and beat Dr. Ciark by a small margin, Pindar reel landing in third place by a nose in advance of Cherry Tree, a stable companion to Dr. Clark. The Goldblatt pair were favored slightly over Lady Madcap. Fast time marked the running of the race, Lady Madcap going the distance in 1 :3S. The earlier stages found the filly far in the rear of the others, alternating with Chery Tree in last place, but she began to move up after passing the half-mile ground, and though forced to go around the others she displayed a great flight of speed that carried her to the leaders steadily and in the last sixteenth she began a battle with Dr. Clark that ultimately resulted in her triumph. Dr. Clark was restrained for three-quarters and after racing into defeat Pindar Peel and Startle appeared to have the race won, but he tired steadily. Goldblatt might have annexed the purse at that if his second string. Cherry Tree, had been successful in getting through during the stretch run, but he was pinned in against the inner rail and when clear came like a shot, but he just missed getting up in time for third place. He was worked out an additional half-mile in preparation for his start next Saturday in the Latonia Championship Stakes. IDIA" SL-30IBR WEATHKK. Ideal Indian summer weather was the rule here this afternoon and it was responsible for the presence of the best midweek attendance being on hand to view some fine sport. Thrilling finishes came with the running of most of the dashes, in some instances the contenders terminating their contests so closely together that it required the official placing to determine the result. The three-quarters three-year-old dash, in which Granite Ware, carrying the colors of Kay Spence, the only horse owned by this owner-trainer, was one of those races that had the crowd in a frenzy of excitement, the leading three alternating in the lead during the last sixteenth, with the result in doubt until the last stride. Granite Ware won by a nose, the same margin separating Quince Garden and Auntie May. The two-year-old maiden race was another that required the judges decision to make known the result. Golden Crest and Xuyaka were the contenders and the Texas-owned gelding got the verdict by a nose from Xuyaka. Gordon Shaw, the favorite, flattered extensively until in the last sixteenth, where he quit badly. Still another tight fit was that of Paris Maid and Fantoche in the mile and an eighth dash. Kewpie OXeil was the outstanding favorite here and he looked like a sure winner going into a good lead at once and apparently having the race at his mercy rounding into the stretch. However, he began tiring fast in the last eighth and was passed in turn by Paris Maid and Fantoche, the former just lasting to win by a nose. Fantoche would have been the winner in another stride. OKLOVA MUCU THE DEST. The talent began auspiciously when they centered on Orlova as the winner of the initial dash. She was much the best and won easily from the poorly ridden Miss Petite and Sir Lawnfal. The sixth race, another two-year-old dash, marked the victory of Away, the first scored by the T. C. McDowell colors this fall. Away had to fight it out hard with Miss Minerva, which only gave way in the last few strides, after having been the leader throughout. Romping Mary, which finished third, might have been the winner had she been able to find a clear course in the early part of the race. Frank AVeir, trainer of the famous Old Rosebud, arrived from Xew York today and intends remaining to the end of the meeting. Mr. Weir has no horses in training in this country at present. His only thoroughbred holdings are Sun Girl and Cainuto, which are at present at Oriental Park race track, having been turned out there since last spring. X. M. Macfarlane, racing secretary of the Green River Jockey Club, is accepting applications for stable room at the new Dade Park track near Henderson and reports that many horsemen have signfied their intention of racing at that track. Because of the suicide of his wife in Cincinnati Thursday morning jockey Earl Pool cancelled all of his mounts for this afternoon. Harry P. AVhitneys Bunting arrived here today and will start in the Latonia Championship Stakes Saturday. The horse, accompanied by a pony and two attendants, came in a special car and shipped in good condition. Jockey Kummer will come here to ride the horse in the race. Interest in the big fixture is becoming more feverish as the time approaches for its decision and requests for choice reservations are coming from all parts of the country, indicating that there will be a record throng here to view the running. The eastern delegation will be particularly strong and among the more notable who have signified their intention of witnessing the race are Thomas Monahan, president of the Cuba-American Jockey and Auto Club, and Roy Carruthers, manager of the famous AValdorf Hotel. Eight starters in the big stake is at present a prospect and looked upon as certain. The race will serve as the best guide to determine the three-year-old championship of the year. The field will likely comprise Startle, Rockminister, Missionary, Lucky Hour, Bunting, Surf Rider, Cherry Tree and Chatterton. "Virgo upset a contemplated coup with Repeater ; I in the final dash when he beat home Repeater handily. AV.
