KING ALFONSO IN RACING Almost Two Million Pesetas Won by Ruler in Seven Years Royal Stables Winners Nearly All Hone HoneBreds Breds Breeding Stock for tke Most MostPart Part Imported From France The Duke of Toledos efforts to popularize racing in Spain have met with considerable success certainly so far as the royal stable ir concerned and while many of the leaders of society have followed the example set them the people show unquestionable signs of taking to the sport sportIn In 191C horses owned by the Duke of To ledo won 169300 pesetas 200775 pesetas in 1917 1D6850 in 1918 238625 in 1919 340012 in 1920 223722 in 1921 and in 1922 626730 pesetas a grand total of 1996014 pesetas giving an average of 285145 pesetas for the seven years This fine record has been made by a stable which has never been of great size and at present the number of horses in training is only twentyfive hut at various times all the leading prizes of the Spanish turf have fallen to its representatives representativesThus Thus the Gran Premio de S M Alfonso XIII at San Sebastian in 1922 was won by Kuban the Gran Premio de San Sebastian fell to Brabant in 1920 while the same animal in 1920 and 1921 took the Gran Premio de Primavera Roman won the Kings Gold Cup at San Sebastian in 1921 after taking the SL Leger the previous year yearA A TIYAUIS SUCCESSES SUCCESSESThat That good horse Antivari carried off among other races the Gran Premio de Otono in 191C and 1917 the Prix de 1Elevage in 1316 the Prix de Cadran in 1917 and in the year following the Premio Babucha at San Sebastian Other prominent bearers of the royal jacket have been Souvenir de Bayonne Souvenir dExil Hoi de la Lande Tambour Chap Pompete Boticelli French Souvenir Loyal Charing Cross and Le Bour get whose exploits included winning the San Sebastian Derby twice the Premio del Joc ¬ key Club twice the Derby dAranjuez five times the Queens Cups at Aranjuez and Santander three times in fact all the lead ¬ ing races racesRuban Ruban Brabant Roman Antivari and Roi de la Lande were the leading contributors to the grand total of winnings mentioned above the first of them with the magnificent sum of 470000 pesetas Brabant coming next with 226500 pesetas The stable jockey is Lyne who rode in England with success some years before the war but ONeill Stokes Hopper Henry Foy OConnor and Head have all worn the dukes colors at different times besides the Spanish horse ¬ man Riolfo RiolfoROYAL ROYAL HORSES HOME BRED BREDMost Most of the horses in the royal stables are home bred but the manager of the stud draws largely on France for his supplies although this is perhaps mainly due to the better means of communication between France and Spain and to the added difli culties which arose during the war period periodThe The lidding sires at the stud farm are Antivari son of Sea Sick and Le Bourget by Delaunay both highly successful bear ¬ ers of the royal livery during their careers on the turf and the latter is apparently the sire enjoying the larger share of patronage He has five yearlings and has been mated with ten of the best mares whereas Anti ¬ vari has only one yearling from Miss Puff by Thrush and Bolide IT was the only mare belonging to the stud on his list listAt At the moment there are thirteen foaling mares at the VoRuada de Lore Toki all but two being of English blood and includ ¬ ing daughters of Son o Mine St Bris Dark Ronald St Amant Thrush VilIonyx Fowl ¬ ingpiece Aldford and Littleton LittletonHOUSKS HOUSKS IX TRAINING TRAININGThe The twentyfive horses in training for the coming season are made up as to five four yearolds including the big winner Ruban by Philippe II Ileyra Tour du Monde by Aldford Vanish Green Hawk by Green ¬ back and Santorin by Corcyra CorcyraThere There are ten threeyearolds three by Antivari and others by such English horses as Friar Marcus King Priam and Ulster King and the Duke de Toledo will open the new season with ten twoyearolds of which four are sired by his own horse Antivari one each by Black Jestsr Levangor Great Sport Beau Bill Pirocho and Grand dEs pagne pagneSpain Spain and the Spanish turf are to be con ¬ gratulated on the public spirit and enterprise of the Duke de Toledo in these magnificent efforts to establish the sport in this country and if he can produce a colt good enough to send to Epsom to challenge for the Derby or a worthy representative in Ruban to compete for the Gold Cup at Ascot lie can count on a great reception from English racegoers Vigilant in London Sportsman
