CHANGED CONDITIONS Cold and Rain Unwelcome Fair Grounds Arrivals Eulalia at Long Odds Defeats DefeatsSuperbum Superbum in the Main Race Tody and Tulalip First XKAV ORLEANS La February 5 The prevalent and widespread irruption of wintry weather did not spare New Orleans and was accompanied here by a sufficient rainfall to change the Fair Grounds going quite ma ¬ terially the change from fast to muddy lead ¬ ing to many scratches and to overthrows of the favorites The city being full of holiday visitors the attendance was not particularly affected and was better than the average of Monday crowds No matter what the weath er of this week may be the Mardi Gras vis ¬ itors are here to be amused and the ma ¬ jority hava the races on their tablets as chief among the diversions to be sought while awaiting the merrymaking that has enticed them to the Crescent City So under any conditions big crowds are expected every day of this week weekThe The principal race of the day the fourth a dash of a mile and seventy yards for threeyearolds was murdered by scrathces eight of the fourteen entered being with ¬ drawn At that it provided considerable excitement in a victory for the longest priced starter of the six which faced the starter Superbum was mads a heavily backed G to ft favorite but the lightly con ¬ sidered Spanish Prince filly Eulalia turned out to be especially favored by the track conditions Always favorably placed she moved up also when Superbum challenged for the lead and took it and joining the lat ¬ ter midway of the stretch raced her to defeat and won going away her performance being quite respectable Briad was a bad third thirdThere There was considerable betting activity in connection with the opening dash which was for maiden twoyearolds at threeeighths o a mile B J Brannons Idle Thoughts was the evenmoney favorite and was warmly sup ¬ ported Just before pest time a slight flurry sent Nancy McKays odds tumbling down from 15 to 7 to 1 1EASTEU EASTEU BONNET OVERLOOKED OVERLOOKEDHowever However the backers of the two mentioned overlooked the filly Easter Bonnet and this daughter of Boots and Saddle Penalty maTa them rue such seemingly neglect on their part by running away from the others in the last eighth to win in a canter Idle Thoughts was second and Nancy McKay third both racing well but never seriously threatening the winner winnerThree Three outsiders in Clarkson Dumbfounder and Bees Wing crossed the winning line in the order named in the seconld race in which Col Taylor was considered to be in an easy spot This veteran sprinter began as if such was the tase by dashing away into a big lead and showing the most speed for a half Apparently that was far enough for the old rogue as He suddenly quit and dropped back about as quickly as he had reached the front frontClarkson Clarkson the winner ran a good race He kept within striking distance of Col Taylor and when the latter gave way took the lead and held sway to the end There was a bit of a struggle for second money Dumbfounder outgaming Bees Wing in the last strides stridesWithdrawals Withdrawals reduced the field In the third race to six starters and Camouflage showed improved form in the going and was re ¬ turned the winner He led from the start opening up a big gap at the head of the homestrctcli but tiring in the final eighth and had to be ridden out to retain his ad ¬ vantage Golden Floss ran well throughout and clear of interference gained considerably on the leader in the last eighth but not enough to change the result Paul Micou was third beating Ablaze by a head for the minor portion of the purse In a spirited stretch drive driveTODY TODY BY INCHES INCHESA A sparkling finish marked the decision of the mile and a sixteenth of the fiftli race in which the Bard of Hope mare Tody tri ¬ umphed over Devonite by the smallest of margins Herinis Kemble was the early pacemaker with Tody in closest pursuit After going threequarters Tody wrested the lead from the pacemaker and hung on ten ¬ aciously to her slender advantage to the end endDevonito Devonito was the surprise in this race Beginning slowly he was far back until entering the stretch where he gained rapidly and In a sensational finish just failed by inches to turn defeat into victory The pacemaker Hermis Kemble waa third but a mighty tired horse Biff Bang ran poorly and never did anything to warrant being held on even terms with the winner in the betting bettingThe The overthrow of Rep in the sixth race was a hard blow to the backers of favorites Rep began like an easy winner dashing to the Continued OB twelfth pice CHANGED CONDITIONS Continued from first page front with the rise of the barrier and showing the way at a good pace that suggested he was perfectly at home in the going Xot until the stretch was reached did he falter in his stride but then he suddenly tired and the filly Tulalip never far away at any stage of the contest was soon alongside and bat ¬ tling hard for the lead After a brief rc Ktstence Hep dropped back beaten and Tulalip drew clear in the final sixteenth to score by three lengths Rep was easily second and old AVaukeag nosed out Quesada for third money moneyA A mile and an eighth race concluded the afternoons sport and again an outsider was victorious when Tulsa at 10 to 1 beat Kttahc and Mountain Rose II the pair most fancied the betting public publicAmaze Amaze alternated in paccmaking to the stretch then dropped out of the picture leaving Tulsa ISttahe and Mountiii Hose II to battle it out This the trio proceeded to do and for a time it appeared that Ettahe would be returned the winner After getting to the front in the last eighth it looked all over but the shouting when Tulsa came along with an irresistible rush that not only brought victory but a length margin over lOttahe which was forced to the limit to hold Mountain Hose II safe It was a brilliant climax to an afternoon of rather dull sport under adverse weather conditions
