Here and There on the Turf Kentuckys Big Stake Eaces Their 1922 Winners and andValues Values Bumored Return of Walter WalterJennings Jennings California Racing Elaborate announcement has been made of the stakes of the Kentucky Jockey Club to be decided at the spring and summer meetings as well as the Queen City Handicap for two yearolds to be decided at Latonia in the fall These stakes are to close at Covington Ky February 24 and furnish a list of races of princely liberality sure to attract generous nominations Of course the 50000 Ken ¬ tucky Derby overshadows the others Last year this race was worth 53775 net when it was won by Morvich The other stakes for the Churchill Downs meeting at Louisville are the Debutante with 5000 added Bashford Manor with 5000 added Kentucky Oaks with 10000 added Clark Handicap with 10000 and the Kentucky Handicap with 10000 Sympathy was the 1922 winner of the Debutante Stakes and it was worth 6840 to the winner winnerWhen When Triumph took the Bashford Manor Stakes he added 6980 to his account accountExterminator Exterminator was the winner of both the Clark and Kentucky Handicaps and they were worth respectively 11375 and 9950 help ¬ ing him along materially in his climb to catch the Man o War money winning figures The Kentucky Oaks fell to Startle and netted her 9920 9920The The richest handicap stake at Latonia in 1922 proved to be the Independence at a mile and a half With its 15000 added it was worth 15540 net to Jefferson Livingstons Firebrand and it was by long odds his most notable victory of the year yearThe The Latonia Derby which is over the regu ¬ lation Derby distance of a mile and a half furnished Thibodaux one of the easiest vic ¬ tories of 1922 It is a race with 15009 added and was worth 14625 to the son of Cunard Margaret Winsor was the winner of the 10000 added Latonia Oaks and when she took the measure of Startle she earned 9340 Major Thomas C McDowells good mare Distinction was the winner of the Enquirer and Quickstep Handicaps In these races she earned respectively 6320 and 5820 5820The The Inaugural Handicap that fell to Lady Madcap last year was worth 5980 to the winner winnerThe The other 5000 Latonia stake races on the list are the Clipsetta Harold and Cincin ¬ nati Trophy each for twoyearolds Of these the respective winners in 1922 with the value to the winner were Anna M Humphrey 6840 Cherokee 6860 and Donges 8180 Then richer than all of the Latcnia offerings except the Latonia Championship was the Queen City Handicap in the fall This is a race at a mile for twoyearolds and so popu ¬ lar that its 10000 in added money made it worth 16575 to the winner last year It was won by Montfort Jones good filly Oui Oui that later on was taken to Pimlico to win the Walden Handicap at a mile mileSo So much for the value of these various races to the 1922 winners It is safe to predict that for this year the values will be as great if not ctill greater It is indeed welcome news that Walter B Jennings contemplates coming back to the turf Those who know the genial sportsman best always expected that he would be back in harness again and that when he comes there will be a warm welcome for him Walter Jennings developed the best horses that raced for A K Macomber and he had much to do with the successes that came to that stable But Jennings and his silks had been tremend ¬ ously popular in New York just as his silks were on the Pacific coast more than a genera ¬ tion ago It is well remembered how not so many years ago he came on from San Fran ¬ cisco with that great sprinter Shot Gun Dainty was another that brought fame to his colors as well as Proper one of the best handicap horses he campaigned under his own name in 1905 1905Walter Walter Jennings has been a turf notable so long that the turf can ill afford to do without him and whether he races his own horses or those of an employer his return is certainly pleasing Of the lightweight riders that have been in the saddle at New Orleans one that has made rapid strides in his chosen profession is little G Mein This lad is under contract to Ser ¬ geant Mortimer Murphy and a study of the charts will reveal that he is making a name for himself among apprentices It was Murphy that developed Thomas last year and he seems to have even a better prospect in the little fellow he has in his care at this time It is probable that Mein will ride in New York this year and he will not want for opportunity when the season swings around to Long Island IslandAlthough Although from time to time doubt has been expressed of a second meeting being conducted at Jefferson Park it can be stated positively that the meeting will take place The work of preparing for this meeting that will follow the close of the Fair Grounds racing is going forward and an effort will be made to have the offerings of a character that will hold the best horses in New Orleans through its dura ¬ tion After many announcements of the Tanforan opening it has be n decided that there will be no racing at the San Francisco track until November 3 By fixing the racing for next jfall every opportunity is afforded to complete all the work that has been planned and the selection of such a date should insure the at ¬ tendance of several good horses that will be about through with their big engagements of the year yearIn In the meantime there is a movement on foot to restore racing to Los Angeles Richard Ferris has obtained a franchise and he is said to have a number of business men associated with him in the project If it should be possible to bring racing back to Los Angeles it would surely be an ideal spot to operate a race track and with its moving picture colony should be assured of better patronage than in the days before that far West city became the Mecca of the screen artists
