SUNDAY AT TIJUANA California Race Goers Journey to Track in Large Numbers Abadane Captures Owners Han ¬ dicap Jockey Pool Again in Front with Three Winners SAN DIEGO Cal February 5 Tijuana came into its own Sunday From the high ¬ ways and byways of California came a crowd a throng it was with the enthusiasm and expectancy of young America the night be ¬ fore Christmas It was in the size of the attendance the volume of the speculation and the splendid card which made the aft ¬ ernoon the greatest of the Tijuana meeting aside from its opening openingThe The track was far from its best but the day was one to conjure by A sun which bespoke the warmth of a day in May and a gentle breeze floating languidly across the verdant mesa from the gentle roll of the Pacific made eastern visitors remark that the California climate was not all in the literature They experienced it in reality at the Mexican track this afternoon afternoonPity Pity it was that the track was not of a nature to make for a record Had it been fast a new mark for the mile would have probably been made for in the Owners Handicap at one mile there were the right kind of horses to tumble the 1 3S mark which was established seven years ago by San gallo There were also the lightest of weights for the thoroughbreds to carry these running from 84 for John Paul Jones to 100 for John S Reardon ReardonEvidently Evidently it was not an elementary move on the part of C B Irwin when he recently claimed Abadane from the Clifton Stable for 4000 AVith Abadane and Ten Buttons a marc which ran like she did not relish the going he had a formidable entry in this contest The heavy support accorded the Irwin runners certainly was justified for the winner turned up in Abadane and at the head of the stretch it appeared momen ¬ tarily that the entry would run onetwo but Ten Buttons gave way under the stiff track and finished fourth fourthHALUS HALUS TE3fPESTUOLTS KACE KACEIt It was Ten Buttons which set the pace jockey P Hum taking her to the front with the rise of the barrier She maintained her advantage for more than half of the dis ¬ tance but Tailor Maid was not to be denied without a struggle Neither was Halu and the latter might have been the winner with better racing luck As it was he was bumped and knocked about and so tempestuous was his journey that he finally quit John Paul Jones making his initial start at the meeting performed in dismal manner True he was buffeted about while rounding the first turn but when in the clear he showed nothing to warrant mentioning mentioningGeorge George W Crippen saddled two winners during the afternoon as did J H McCoole of Omaha Crippens good fortune came in the third and fourth races when his Jaclc Ledi and Lewis B cantered into the winners ring Jack Ledi was pounds the best in his race and it was merely an exercise gallop for him to take the measure of Billy Joe and Conichon Lewis B had the diminutive jockey Howard in the saddle and the midget almost tossed the race away Entering the stretch Lewis B raced into a clear lead and the shouting as far as the old geldings victory was concerned However Howard sat so still that Lariat finishing out the mile journey with a rush almost nipped him by a nose noseWHIPPET WHIPPET ix itousix FINISH FINISHJ J H McCooles successes came about when Whippet and Bill Head scored in the fifth and seventh races respectively Botli were admirably ridden by Jockey W Pool In ¬ deed it took the latters greatest skill to land them home in front Whippet under one of these snug rides that are few and far between took the measure of Rajah by a short head in a rousing finish It was Pool against Stevens and the Kentucky lad triumphed triumphedBill Bill Head in the seventh wanted lo toss it up in the stretch but Pool beat a steady tatoo on tlia old fellows ribs with his heels and at the end the best part of his chestnut body FcgartyWith showed in front of Frank Fcgarty With three victories to his credit Pool swung his leg over the back of Honest George in the last race at fiveeighths Kinglike ruled the favorite and that speedy horse was returned the winner but only by a matter df an eyelash as the saying goes The ending of this race was a fitting climax to a stellar day of racing and breathlessly the big throng awaited the decision of the judges When it was learned that Kinglikc had won a great cheer arose as is the cose when the favorite scores scoresThe The twoyearolds shipped here from Tan Coutinuctl on twelfth PCO SUNDAY AT TIJUANA Continued from first page foran owned by J W Marchbank took
