W R COES PLACE ON TURF How a Subscription Filly Began a Notable Establishment Immense Racing and Breeding Interest that thatHad Had Its Beginning frith a Sporting SportingRace Race at Locust Taller Coarse NEW TOUK N T February 7 Back in 1912 when there was no racing over any of the tracks of the Jockey Club fifty sports ¬ men contributed 1000 each for the purchase of thoroughbred yearlings There were fifty to be boaght and the contributors were to draw them by lot This fund was turned over to William R Midgeley to make the purchases and after lie had accumulated the fifty required there was still a considerable considerablemount mount left that was hung up as prizes for the horses thus bought This was all ac ¬ complished by the Piping Rock Racing Asso ¬ ciation and the following year at that pic ¬ turesque course these twoyearolds were first raced racedAnd And this tells the tale of how W R Coe came to the turf Mr Coe was one of the fifty subscribers and in the drawing he was awarded the filly Klection Bet a daughter of Electioneer the Futurity winner of 190G Election Bet was winner of one of the prizes offered for the subscription horses and Mr Coe became an enthusiast Shortly after he purchased another filly Bet and she proved tremendously successful when made a stee ¬ plechaser She was winner of the Harbor Hill of 1916 and two years later she won the rich Manly Memorial Steeplechase of the Maryland Jockey Club at Pimlico PimlicoFrom From this modest but sporting introduction to the turf W R Coe has grown to be one of the foremost sportsmen and breeders He has made a number of notable purchases of foreign stallions and mares and in the matter of mares in particular he has done big thing for American breeding interests when he brought over several of the Sled iriere matrons matrons3IAIIES 3IAIIES IX KENTUCKY KENTUCKYHis His Shoshone Ranch in the Shoshone Val ¬ ley of Wyoming each year has sent good horses to the races and his breeding opera ¬ tions have expanded to such an extent that he has a considerable detachment of his matrons quartered in Kentucky as well as at the Wyoming ranch ranchHis His stallions Polymelian Sweep on and Harmonicon are in Kentucky under leases while he has retained Over There and Hells Bells for his far west breeding farm Over There is an imported son of Spearmint and the Sundridge mare Summer Girl that fin ¬ ished first in the Lawrence Realization of 1919 but was disqualified for a questionable foul and the prize went to Harry Payne Whitneys filly Vexatious VexatiousIt It was when the Coe racing establishment grew to something approaching its present importance tht Jcre Carroll who was early trainer for the stable occupied all his time with t HJ jumpers and the other horses were turned over to W H Karrick who has since trained them with a full measure of success successAt At the time the horses were taken over by Karrick they formed only a small part of the Karrick establishment In the same stable there were the horses of H K Knapps Oneck Stable and Karrick also trained a considerable string for the late Schuyler L Parsons a valued member of the Jockey Club But the Coe string soon outgrew the others until the serious busi ¬ ness of Karrick was fitting the horses of the sportsman who drew Election Bet in the 1000 pool Mr Knapp continues to race a few horses and as a matter of fact for 1923 his silks promise to be of more im ¬ portance than for several years but in point of numbers in training the Coe string make up a vast majority of the Karrick outfit outfitThe The Karrick stable consists of twenty horses and there are fifteen that will race under the white and green Coe silks while the other five are the property of Mr Knapp KnappThe The Knapp string consists of the three yearold Hobgoblin and four twoyearolds twoyearoldsW W B Coe Stable StableMany Many Smiles ch f 4 by Haruionicou Laughaway Laughawayby by Cicero Wigwam b f 3 by Polymeliau Garner by IU IUdiuni diuni
