Here and There on the Turf Derby and Preakness Horses HorsesGreentree Greentree Stable Candi ¬ dates datesGood Good Record of Cherry Pie Rialto bay son of Chicle and Matinee by Broomstick is an eligible to the Kentucky Derby from the Gresntrce Stable Like En hantment another good son of Chicle this colts post manners were so bad iust year that he did not race near to what was promised by his trials Time and again his failure to leave the post with his opponents gave him scant chance and that was particularly ap ¬ plicable to his last race of the year It was in that split of the Pimlico Futuritj that was won by Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sallys Alley With his stablemate Moonraker he was away badly and closed an immense gap to finish fourth Rialto ran most of hi races last year under the colors of Harry Payne Vhitney his breeder but in the fall he went to the Green tree Stable and his first race under those pop ¬ ular silks was in the mile Manor Handicap at Laurel That race was won by his stable mate Cherry Pic while he was unplaced Rialto was the winner of three races and each was for Mr Whitney He was not brought to the races by Rowe until August 10 at Saratoga and won his first race His otber victories were at Havre dc Grace and Laurel LaurelAs As good a judge as trainer Rowe had hiph hopes for Rialto early in the year but he was one of the many twoyearolds that was sick early in the year and though he had shown brilliantly in private work there was no time that he raced to that promise In the Queen City Handicap at Latonia he was virtually left at the post and that was one of the stable disappointments of the year Rowe is still training this colt for the Greentrea Stable and at this time he is by some considered as a particularly bright Derby prospect There was nothing in his racing of last year that could give him a serious chance but he has shown too much in private not to be taken into account If all should go well with his Derby preparation Rowe will saddle both Rialto for the Greentree Stable and Enchantment for Harry Payne Whitney in the Churchill Downs feature featureThere There are other candidates from both of these stables but these appear to be the most prominent of the Brookdalebred eligibles eligiblesAnother Another of the Greentree Stable nominations for the Kentucky Derby is Barbary Bush But little is known of his claims except what he Bhowed in private last year He was only started twice and in his first race was beaten a head by Fly by Day with which he was coupled His second race was in the Hopeful Stakes in which he cut no figure figureThis This is a wellmade chestnut son of Whisk Broom II and Cardamine a daughter of Sir Archibald He was on the sick list for a con ¬ siderable time as a twoyearold but was always considered one of the stars of the stable The fact that he begins his threeyearold campaign as a maiden will be a decidjd advantage to him should he meet defeat in the Derby But he has not yet been beaten there and stranger things have happened than a maiden winning winningThere There is another of the Greentree Stable colts that is probably more of a favorite with Mrs Whitney the owner of that establish ¬ ment than any of the others This one is Cherry Pie bay son of Chicle and Cherry Malotte He was bred by Mrs Whitney and has a deal of English on both sides of his house Cherry Malotte is a daughter of Or ¬ lando and Dottie by Leonatus while Chicle is an English son of Spearmint and Lady Ham ¬ burg II a daughter of Hamburg and the Eng ¬ lish mare Lady Frivoles FrivolesBut But the sentiment attaches to Cherry Ma ¬ lotte herself This mare was one of the most consistent steeplechasers which ever bore the pink and black of the Grcentres Stable and raced and won until she was nine years of Cherry Malotte was not started until her fourth year and then only appeared in public twice but in her subsequent career she raced both frequently and brilliantly winding up with a winning race in the Meadowbrook Steeplechase in her ninth year She was seven times winner as a fiveyearold four as a six 3earold two as a sevenyearold four as an eightyearold and once as a nineyearold nineyearoldThis This made her winning score eighteen races in six years and right through each year she was meeting the best that could be mustered against her under big weights weightsAmong Among the crosscountry victories of this great mare were the Brook Champion Steeple ¬ chase of both 1914 and 1917 Great United Hunts Handicap of 191G and 1917 National Hunt Cup of 1914 Country Club Grand An ¬ nual of 1915 Chamblet Memorial of the same year as well as several other crosscountry races of importance It is small wonder that Mrs Whitney has a warm spot in her heart for such a mare and she bids fair to go to greatness in the stud studAs As for Cherry Pie himself he showed enough last year to be taken seriously among the best of the threeyearolds of this year yearScott Scott Harlan had him ready early and he won the first time he was shown That was at Belmont Park on May 25 He followed this by finishing a close second to McKee in the j Juvenile Stakes and then came one of his notable victories when he won the Keene Memorial Stakes In that race he turned the tables on McKee Other good ones back of him were Crest Vigil and Sallys Alley the filly that improved to win both the Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park and the Pimlico Fu ¬ turity at Pimlico in the fall This victory in the Keene Memorial Stakes cost Cherry Pie some penalties in his later races but in the Nursery at Belmont Park he ran its three quarters in 1 11 to win while giving weight to every other starter He was kept in train ¬ ing until late in the fall and his last winning race was in the Manor Handicap at Laurel in October OctoberIn In all cf his twoyearold races Cherry Pie was running through the stretch in a manner to suggest his ability to travel a good route and Scott Harlan had high hopes for him as a threeyearold when he went into winter quarters at Belmont Park
