Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 3 1903 Racing at New Orleans and Oakland Jockey Fuller riding Major Tenny and Floyd K both from the stable of Sam Hildreth scored a double win for himself and the Hil drath Stable G C Bennett who has been at New Or ¬ leans the last two or three days intimates that his efforts to secure the reinstatement of Coburn in San Francisco may prove suc ¬ cessful Coburn was set down ostensibly for a bad ride but in reality for dissipating about town at nights That he will be seen in the saddle at Memphis wiM add not a little to the local popularity of that meeting for Coburn is popular with tnc Memphis racegoing public Bardclph Gorman Bauers unbeaten horse had a narrow escape from a serious accident last week at Memphis He made a I playful attempt to kick out the side of his stall and succeeded in getting one of his feet through a hole in the wall about three feet from the ground He hung there awhile and andfinally finally succesded in getting out without hurting j himself further than taking a little skin off offhis his leg Trainer Burlcw has had Bardolphs leg bound up for a few days but will work him soon Jockey Robbins will ride in the East this year according to the announcement made by his father recently He says that he has virtually come to terms with some eastern owner but for good and sufficient reasons would not make known his name for a few days The action of the New Orleans racing officials in denying Robbins the privilege of taking outside mounts when the track is bad may hasten his departure from New Orleans Last Wednesday the little fellow was engaged to ride Ainigari the winner of the Speed Han ¬ dicap but owing to the condition of the track the stewards would not permit him to fill the engagement The feature race at New Orleans the fourth was an overnight handicap for the older division of sprinters there Six horses went to the post with H I Saxtons Federal getting the bulk of the publics support When the start came most of the field were caught flat footed with the exception of Tclamon which was away to a running start Telamon opened up a gap of three lengths before the rest of the field had even started Jockey Gannon wisely pulled Telamon up just enough to hold this advantage Scotch Plaid and Anglesea were the ones which set out to catch the flying leader with Federal in fifth position This order was maintained until the halfmile post was reached where Federal which had been gradually improving his position took up the chase and was gaining ground with every stride Tha distance was too short however and Telamon was home first with two lengths to spare Federal was second four lengths in front of Scotch Plaid which in turn was thirty lengths before Royal Athlete Much ad ¬ verse criticism took place after the race was over in regard to the start With a fair start Federal would have won easily As it was he made up a great distance and was only beaten by the two short lengths mentioned above
