PRINCE DIRECTS GAMENESS Shows Stamina in Winning Mile and an Eighth Eace at Tijnana Walter Bant Gets TTosc Decision Orcr Doable Van Frank Fotrarty Wins for Second Time lu Succeeding Days SAN DIEGO Cal March 8 Displaying a courage which could not fail to win admira ¬ tion Prince Direct from the C B Irwin string yesterday afternoon at Tijuana would not take no for an answer This son of Key Hindoo stood a hard ride from the start He came with a rush through the final eighth passed Hyanpom with comparative case and when the end was reached he had taken victory by an even length He won going away All of this happened in the main race of the afternoon a handicap at one mile and an eighth Owner Irwin elected to run Rajah with Prince Direct as an entry but the former was of little use in accom ¬ plishing victory victoryThe The public depended on Prince Direct and from the number of his supporters it was somewhat surprising that he paid 140 to 1 as the winner Catharine Marrone from the J C McKay stable chose to establish the pace and she opened up a gap which she held until turning for home This was her race At this point Hyanpom took up the running and showed a lengths advantage but he had yet to reckon with the rush of Prince Direct The latter challenged the leader about midway of the stretch and here competition for first money ceased Old Faithful closed up a lot of ground to be third thirdThere There was no particular attraction of the afternoons spcrt but even despite this and a slow track the attendance held up well wellTTXDEUIIATED TTXDEUIIATED CAUL ROBERTS ROBERTSProbably Probably the most underrated horse at Tijuana in many a day was Carl Roberts which turned up the winner of the fourth race at fiveeighths He paid the good price of 5850 to 51 The talent decided that Ros coe Goose would be the winner and made him the favorite at even money He was a con ¬ tender for a part of the dash but quit to a walk The winner was kept within striking distance of the pace until the far turn where jockey Maiben gave him his head and he came on to win with something in reserve An outsider Marion Fluke was second only a neck in front of Emma Weller WellerAnother Another victory for owner Irwin came about in the fifth race at one mile In this contest his sturdy longdistance runner Wal ¬ ter Dant overhauled Double Van within the shadow of the finish and won by a nose Jockey Pablo Martinez was astride the win ¬ ner and he rode with that determination and technique that has marked many of his ap ¬ pearances here for several years yearsThe The best horse was not the winner of the opening dash at three and onehalf furlongs for twoyearolds This found Porter Ella from the J W Marchbank stable graduating from the ranks of the maidens However Stargo should have earned brackets He was running two strides to the winners one while racing nearest the inner rail and just when it appeared that he would get through Porter Ella bore over and the opportunity faded So sharp was this interference that jockey Thompson on Stargo was forced to pull his mount up rather suddenly This resulted in Brandcis which had a clear course beating Stargo by a head for the place placeRunning Running right back to his good race of the day previous Frank Fogarty gained a neck decision over Vic in the final contest This was at one mile and seventy yards The winner after being forwardly placed forged to the front entering the stretch and loomed up as an easy victor However he had Vic to consider as this consistent mare came up with a meteroic burst of speed and just failed to get up Horace Lerch was an easy third After this race it was learned that two claims had been filed for Frank Fogarty In the shakeoff Al Knifong took the son of Wrack for 1700 1700Eddie Eddie Thornton manager of the T J Fen dergast stable of New Orleans was an ar ¬ rival today Mrs Thornton is with him himWhile While being schooled at the barrier this morning King of the Spa reared up and fell back on his colored exercise boy Ralph Bruen who was in the saddle He was ren ¬ dered unconscious but quickly revived and escaped without serious injury injuryClarence Clarence Buxton disposed of the filly Little Hope to C Daniel at private sale this morn ¬ ing This acquisition will take the stall va ¬ cated by Serapis when he was claimed by J B McGinn McGinnDr Dr T 1 Ogle added Dart to his stable by purchase today It was a private sale
