Here and There Thereon on the Turf Mr Belmonts Derby Can ¬ didate didateMessenger Messenger a Grand Appear ¬ ing Colt ColtHandicaps Handicaps Promise Fine Eacing Oue of the most notable nominations to the Kentucky Derby is that of August Bel ¬ monts Messenger This magnificent chestnut son of Fair Play and the Rock Sand mare Mission did not race often enough last year to take an entirely defined place among the good twoyearolds but he attracted so much attention that many good judges proclaimed him the best for his age of the year Ha was only started three times He was third to Dust Flower and Cartoonist in the Flash Stakes and probably would have been the win ¬ ner had it not been for his lack of racing edu ¬ cation His next start was in the Saratoga Special in which he was again beaten but in the Grab Bag Handicap he was returned the winner and in that race turned the tables on Dust Flower while others behind him were Donges McKse and the fast filly Runlise It was after his showing in this race that he was laid away for the Futurity but shortly after went wrong and did not appear again under silks It is somewhat significant that Mr Belmont did not nominate any other of his promising threeyearolds Messenger is one of the most magnificent threeyearolds in training and it is doubtful if any other in the big race compares with him in looks He has been kept going all winter and trainer Feustel has every reason to hope that he will be ready for both the Preak ness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby He stands more than sixteen hands high now and is a colt of superb lines Entries that have been received for the handicaps of the year leave no doubt of the number of the horses there will be on hand in that division It is probable that three yearolds will figure extensively in the han ¬ dicaps but many of the older favorites will be back in training and they wiI not want for opportunity The threeyearolds of 1922 have graduated to the handicap division and they will more than offset the numbers that have raced into oblivion or to a place on a stock farm Some of the older stock that have been named for the handicaps that have already closed are Grey Lag Mad Hat ¬ ter Thunderclap Prince James Firebrand Careful Exodus Dinna Care Tryster Captain Alcock Knobbie Devastation Paul Jones Fly ¬ ing Cloud and King Albert and Fitzsimmons has not yet given up hope for Playfellow PlayfellowThis This list comprises most of the notable han ¬ dicap horses named for the New York handi ¬ caps that have closed that are more than four years old It is a rather formidable band but when rated with the new fouryearolds it must be admitted that the old timers will have their work cut out outJust Just a few of the new fouryearolds that will confine their racing to the handicaps are KaiSang Lucky Hour Oceanic Snob II Rockminister Surf Rider Little Chief Bunt ¬ ing Pillory Horologe Fair Phantom St Henry Ray Jay Thibodaux Brainstorm Rocket Olympus and others of note noteThese These will furnish most of the contention in tho fouryearold division and they com ¬ prise a list that will make it uncomfortable for the older horses But they in turn will find some lively contention from the new three yearolds for that is a division that promises to be exceedingly strong for this year yearIt It is interesting to note that the Nev York ¬ ers will have a chance to see Thibodaux in action this year This good son of Cunard and Electro won the Latonia Derby last year and it is probable he would have attained a greater threeyearold prominence had he been supplied with as many engagements as were most of the other good threeyearolds He has been named for the Metropolitan and Suburban Handicaps as well as other long ¬ distance races that have been closed
