SON OF JOHREN WINS • Takes His Race at Bowie Like a Promising Colt. * Fannie Bean Runs Away from Op-perman in the Feature Race — Biff Bang Is First. ♦ BOWIE. M 1.. April 10.— While the Princeton Claiming Handicap was the programed feature at Bowie this afternoon there was probably as much interest in the Mount Vernon Purse, at a mile and seventy yards, that marked the first appearance of the year of .lames Bodens Opperman. a horse that has been from time to time heralded as something better than ordinary. Opperman raced, but he was thoroughly beaten by Fannie P.ean. which bad the advantage of seasoning by racing. Opperman will have to improve materially over his showing in the race it In- is to be rated among the really good horses. The day was delightful for racing and it was a card that furnished the best kind of entertainment for the big crowd. With five of the seven races over a distance of ground greater than a mile. The two-year-old race of the afternoon uncovered a pair of speedy colts from the stable of Harry Payne "Whitney in Close Work and Dusk. They finished first and second and each showed enough to warrant the opinion that it is of good class, "lose Work is the first of the progeny of .Tohren to make his appearance in public this year. He is a well made bay. of good size and racy lines, though not as blocky or as heavy a type as Dusk. They can run fast and proved to be well schooled at the barrier. OIMFRM WS DEFEAT SURPRISES. Opperman is one of the horses that had been attracting a deal of attention in his morning training gallops and his defeat by Fannie Bean was a decided surprise, though the daughter of Zeus in her two previous races at the meeting demonstrated that she is coming to good form. There was nothing particularly impressive about the victory of the filly, but the feature of the race was the tin fitness of Opperman. With little delay at the post the horses were sent away in good alignment, although Fannie Bean began slowly. Pool rushed Opperman away with such success that he rushed into the lead immediately, but when the back-stretch was reached Fannie Bean was being saved two lengths behind him and going easily. This order was maintained until leaving the backstretch, when Abel shook up the filly and she quickly joined the Boden gelding. Maryland Belle all this time was racing forwardly, while Ramkin was bringing up the rear. When Fannie Bean came alongside of Opperman Pool tried to rouse the son of Pataud, but it was of no avail and the filly passed swiftly and drew away into a long lead and the race was as good as over. She was never afterward extended to win by seven lengths easing up. Then right at the end Maryland Belle all but beat the tiring Opperman for second place. Pool having to ride him vigorously to save that part of the purse. GONDOLIER DISSA POINTS. The Princeton Claiming Handicap brought victory to 1.. T. Bauers Biff Hang, and Episode ractd to second place with Pastoral Swain I eating Gondolier for third money. The others in order of the finish were Billy Barton. North Wales and Belphrizonia. The fact that Fannie Bean was such an easy winner, while in a previous race Gondolier had giveTi her a stern battle made his stock popular before this race, but the fact was not taken into consideration that Fannie Bean had not run a particularly brilliant; race when she beat Oppermcm. As the start came Belphrizonia wheeled sightly and was off slowly, but the others left in good style ainl Kpisode showed the way around the first turn. Gondolier was going along easily in second place, but had lost some ground on the turn. 1astoral Swain and Billy Barton raced close together after him with Biff Bang and North Wales following, Episode was still showing the way but Pastoral; Swain was right after him and Gondolier finally crowded out, until forced to go wide. It was when Hearing the stretch, turn that Biff Bang began his deciding rush and moving up rapidly on the outside of Kpisode and Pastoral Swain rushed past them and won going away. Abel lost much ground with Gondolier on the stretch turn and then was of little help in the stretch, so that Pastoral Swain, though well beaten by both Biff Bang and Kpisode, beat him almost four lengths for third money. The Harry Payne Whitney colors were first and second in the opening half-mile dash, for maiden two-year-olds, when Close Work and Dtisk easily beat Black Art. Black Ail was the only one to give the Whitney pair the Continued on eighth page. SON OF JOHREN WINS Continued from first page. semblance of an argument and ran a good race. The Peruvian was easily best of the slow sprinters that met in the second race and after having raced Helen Atkin into defeat drew easily away to win with speed to spare, while Hobey Baker raced to second place and Minute Man saved third money. On the way to the pest it was observ. id that Minute Man was decidedly sore and througlii-OSrt the race he gave like evidence, although at the end he was racing well. Zouave, old son of Sain and Black Tail, made the pace all the way in the mile and seventy yards for selling platers that was the third offering. Smarty was just as easily second best and he was second through-cut. The Foreigner saved third -place from Service Star. There was a long delay at the post in the sixth race, for which Hcllahm and Sa-tana were largely to blame. The start was a good one and the winner turned up in Jacques. He had to be much the best to win and at the end outfinished Miracle Man, while Satana beat Lkasc for the short end of the purse. *j .
