. GRAND NATIONAL FEATURES Perseverance was rewarded in the case of the victory of Serjeant Murphy in the Grand National. He had previously competed on four occasions at Aintree and once when a substitute race was run at Gatwick during the war. Last year he was unplaced at Liverpool, was fourth in 1920 and unplaced in 1919. But his vicissitudes in connection with the race do not compare with those of Frigate, a well-known steeplechase mare in her day. which won the National in 1889. She took part in the race on seven occasions and was second in three ere achieving the highest honor in cress-country sport. As a six-year-old she was second to Voluptuary in 1884. second to Roquefort in 1S85, fell in 1886. was unplaced in 1887, in 1888 ran second to Playfair after meeting with bad luck in the race and being forced out of the course by the swerving of one of the competitors and was unplaced in 1890. Frigate was eleven years old when she won and it may be added that Sergeant Murphy is now thirteen — the same age at which Why Not was successful in 1891. Why Not has been the only winner of the National Hunt Steeplechase to -score in the Grand National and though Conjuror II. made a gallant effort to emulate his example this year he could only finish third. « __
