CALIFORNIA BREEDING NEWS Remount Stallion Gunrock Growing in Favor — War Cry Good Foal Getter. SAN FRANCISCO, Cal.. April 22.— Four foals have arrived this season at the Heather Farm of J. W. Marehbank in Contra Costa County. The undefeated King Heather was the first foal two years ago at the big stud establishment and since that time the breeding operations have been steadily expanding. The matrons have the freedom of large paddocks and this year, by reason of the late rains, the feed is especially rich. Of the four foals so far three are living. A colt by the Sunstar horse War Cry. dam Black Wing, died accidentally when four days old. Four more foals are expected. The living foals are: Chestnut colt, by Gunrock- Miss Cook, by Eyebrow ; brown filly, by War Cry— Reina Borgia, by Borgia: chestnut filly, by War Shot — Finette, by Vesuvian. Gunrock is the son of Rock Sand and Gunfire that has been standing for several years at the Remount Service Depot at the Davis Farm of the Iniversity of California. Colonel A. N. McClure. who is in charge of the breeding activities of the Remount Service in the Pacific district: Charles T. Boots and other horsemen have a high opinion of Gun-rock and it may be he will sire some good ones in the next few years. * Miss Cook, now five years old. was purchased at Tijuana last year by Boots for the Marehbank account, along witli seven or eight others. She is from the Maxio mare Stella Cook and seems to be promising as a broodmare. Quite a number of the California breeders have sent mares to tie court of tie army horse and it is lkiely bis sons and daughters will be showing up soon in the racing at Tanforan and other coast tracks. War Cry was raced on eastern courses by "Charley" Boots and for some time has been standing at Elmwood Stock Farm near Milpitas. He is a good foal getter and his owr.er has confidence will be a success as a sire. Reina Borgia comes from the well-known Br u Lis stock.
