Here and There c on the Turf — — _ * Louisvilles Gorgeous Antici- C pations. t Expecting More Derby Visi- s tors Than They Can Man- c age. Exterminators Race for a i New Honor. , All early indications are that the greatest crowd in the history of the Kentucky Derby a will gather at Churchill Downs Saturday. May j j 19. According to railroad official? five special , trains are scheduled to come from New York. L. and N. Railroad officials say that road alone will bring 15,000 persons to witness the Derby over its lines. , Railroads out of Chicago will take 10.000 more to the Derby, say representatives of the . various roads. With delegations from Indianapolis, St. Louis and .other places it is eti-mated that out of-town visitors to the big turf event will reach the 50,000 mark this year. What the Churchill Downs management will . do to place the crowd is a quandary. General , manager Winn is devoting all his time to I providing space, so that as many as 75.00U . persons at least can view the race. Seating accommodations for 25.000 have be:n provided. That many more can get vantage ground on the terraces and steps of the long stands, but the overflow is the problem which | is bothering Mr. Winn. He is resourceful, , however, and before the day of the Derby arrives he will probably have found a solu , tion to this puzzle. There are no more boxes 1 to be had. Reservations have leng ago be?n 1 made, not only for all the eld boxes but also 1 the n?w ones which are being constructed in 1 the new steel clubhouse addition. The management wil not break the rule as to reserving single seats. There are many of these, but they will go to the first that reach the Downs • on Derby day. AH of which excites regret that we cannot say as much and much more about a Derby day right here in Chicago. Maybe we will I presently and sooner than appearances now indicate. Hail Exterminator! Winning a Philadelphia 1 Handicap adds nothing particular to the fame - of this mighty warrior of the race track, but t it helps. He is now in an unfinished race » that is watched all over this land. That is 5 his race against the record of Man o War as s th? greatest money winner of American turf f history. He chipped off a bit of the difference . when he ran third in the Harford Handi . cap and by winning the Philadelphia Handicap . Saturday sliced off a still greater portion. 1. Wh?n the year began Exterminator lacked i S5.259 of having won as much as Man o War. He has wiped out ,850 of this discrepancy ;. at Havre de Grace. Surely the Pirn . lico meeting fhoull be good for the ,410 0 needed and a generous amount on top of it. Lugubrious rumors about Exterminator r floated out cf the East a whie back. Just t what the trouble was was not indicated. But t it was suggested that somehow cr other little e or nothing was to be expected from him this ii year. He seems to Le a desirabb sort of a a habten. There seem to be no obstacles in sight to prevent his passing Man o Wars s 19,465 right quickly. Then he can s?t sail il for the Isinglass record ami it would be a a rash man who would say he cannot make it. t That record is 91,275. Dunlin will have to show better form than he did yesterday to have a chance for Preak ness Stakes honors. It is true Vigil is no slouch when it came to running fa«t, but. on 1 the basis of her recent race. Sallys Alley would give him ten pounds and a beating without a bit of trouble. Owner Kilmer is , a lucky man and that filly may be his successor • to Exterminator as a great and brightly blazing star of the turf.
