BET MOSIE TRIUMPHS ♦ Furnishes Big Surprise Taking the Measure of Lady Madcap. ♦ Latter, a Prohibitive Favorite, Finishes Third — Coes Elvina a Promising Juvenile. ♦ LEXINGTON, Ky.. May 3.— E. EL Bradley annexed his first purse of the Kentucky racing season when Bet Mosie, last years runner-up in the Kentucky Derby, accounted for the Frankfort Handicap at one mile, which featured todays card, and incidentally furnished a big surprise by taking the measure of Desha Breckinridges Lady Madcap, which ruled a prohibitive favorite. Not alone did Bet Mosie beat her home, but also Parader. which took second place away from her in the last stride. In a preceding start Bet Mosie performed in dull style and on that occasion was ridden by C. Ponce, who kept him far out of it during the early part and when he began riding hard the colt responded and finished gamely. He was ridden this afternoon by A. Wilson • and tlie improved handling was responsible for Bet Mcsie going promptly into the lead and he maintained his position without difficulty, the pace being uniform for nearly the entire trip. Lady Madcap in the early stages was under restraint, but when darner urged her hard she was unequal to the task and Bet Mosie continued in the van to the end. Parader was last for three-quarters, but thereafter he came steadily ■•"id wore down Lady Madcap for second p.*.e right at the finish. Lady Madcap was probably a bit short and the race will have a beneficial effect on her. The mile in 1 :38% is the fastest at this distance over the track at this meeting. ANOTHER BANNER CROWD. The fifth racing day here brought to the course another banner attendance and conditions for the sport could not be improved on. The volume of betting showed an increase. The defeat of Lady Madcap was costly to a loyal local following. With the exception of sustaining losses on Lady Madcap, backers of favorites scored heavily, for popular choices met success with regularity after the initial dash. In the second race many newcomers started and a splendid prospect was uncovered in W. It. Coes Elvina, a daughter of Poly-ir.elian —Dustpan II. She looked racy and performed to her general appearance, scoring in hollow fashion and eased almost to a canter in the last sixteenth. New Beauty, carrying the colors of Colonel W. E. Applegate, also showed an impressive performance by finishing second, with Hello in third place. The other two-year-old dash fell to Will Land. Surprise was occasioned that he should be a starter in a race where conditions called for starters to be sold for 00. It was explained that his owner had made a mistake at time of entry and that he had sought to get him excused from the race without success. Owner Worthington was extremely lucky not to have the colt claimed at the low-cost of ,300 that it would have entailed to secure him. Buck was the runner-up to Will Land. This Bradley-owned youngster showed up well for a first-time starter. Twelve platers opened proceedings and furnished an exciting contest, with victory going to James 1J. Brown from Louanna, with Dernier Son in third place. Itoldgold proved best in the third, for which he was an outstanding favorite, defeating Manicure Maid and Velma M. Thomas C. McDowells colors figured in their initial victory during the afternoon when Ascot just managed to outstay the outsider j Juba after a hard stretch drive. The closing dash found Kirklevington the winner after standing a drive gamely to overhaul Nurture. Topmast, coming from far back, landed in third place. + —
