CHANGE IN DERBY BETTING Mishaps to Donges and Cartoonist Send Future Book Backers After Other Prospects. LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 3.— When the news came today that Donges had gone amiss at Lexington and Cartoonist slightly lame at Belmont Park, with the prospect of neither starting in the Derby, it sent the future book backers of these two colts scurrying around for a place to hedge. While Donges and Cartoonist were being prepared for the Derby here this spring many followers of the two colts wagered on each of them at future hook odds "play or pay." Since the announcement that both have met with mishaps a steady backing was noticed today about Chittagong, Nassau, Anna M. Humphrey and Prince K. in local books. Westerners are loyal to Derby eligi-bles they have seen in training. Prince K. is now the choice of local followers of the sport. Work on the new clubhouse and pergola is practically completed. There will be 147 new boxes, holding eight persons each, in this section. In addition the terrace in front of the pergola will have 800 chairs and 400 benches will be placed in front of the clubhouse. The baby grandstand in front of the paddock has been improved with a canopy arrangement at the back. Colonel Phil China has wired superintendent Tom Young that he will be at the Downs early next week with a stable of horses belonging to W. R. Coe, H. B. McLean and former U. S. Senator J. V. Bailey. The work of oiling the roads about the stable inclosure at the Downs was completed today.
