RIALTO IN GOOD FORM » Wins His First Race of the Year in Fast Time. ♦ — - Tall Timber Takes Another Purse — Shoal First in the Steeplechase — Lady Myra at Last. PIMLICO, Md., May 3.— Another Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes prospect loomed across the horizon in a brilliant manner when the Greentree Stables Rialto won the Southern Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth. His victory was a thorough one over Sedge-field and Miss Smith. Rialto conceded plenty of weight to his opponents and set a fast pace all the way to win after a shaking up by a length. Coltiletti, who had the mount, had the son of Chicle — Matinee under slight restraint during the early running, while Miss Smith and Autumn Bells raced in pursuit. Sedgefield was in early trouble and Bell was forced to ease him back. Rialto ran with his head in the air and kept twitching his ears. The field bunched as the stretch was reached and Rialto felt the sting of the whip. Sedge-field, in the meantime, had gained steadily and found an opening between Miss Smith and the winner. Closing up gamely he got up in the final strides to beat Miss Smith. The litter is a future candidate for the Oaks. Tall Timber continued his winning ways and scored his third straight victory during the Maryland campaign when he was a fairly easy winner of the Made-at-Home Purse from W. S. Kilmers Sunference, while Wrangle was bound to be third with only three starters. Butwell allowed the Wilson colt to set a fast pace in the early running and had him under restraint, then easily drew away from Sunference after a challenge from the latter. LE MARSOUIN FAILS. The Patapsco Steeplechase, for four-year-olds and over under claiming conditions, resulted in a victory for R. Pendings Shoal, ridden by Kleeger, with Le Marsouin second and Vox Populi II. a good third. Of the nine that faced the starter, but two failed to make the course, Ireland and The Sphinx. Off Color continued the winning streak of the Glen Riddle Farm Stable and won the first offering of the day, a dash for maiden two-year-old fillies at a half mile, in a hard drive from Sunny Sal, while Eagerness was a good third. But for bad luck early Sunny Sal would have won. J. T. Buckleys King John, after several attempts, earned brackets in the fourth race, a mile dash. His was an easy one over Lough Storm and Gallagher. The race was under claming conditions and started and finished at the sixteenth post. Lough Storm, after rounding the last turn, raced into the lead and appeared the winner, but tired and gave way to King John. The latter wa3 close up from the start. Gallagher ran a good race for his first time out. Gadfly, carrying the H. P. Whitney colors, was an easy winner from Comixa and Heeltaps was third. Gadfly was ridden by McAfee and set a fast pace for the entire race. Lady Myra ran to her real form today and without trouble won the Howard Claiming Stakes at a mile, for three-year-olds. Ridden by Mein she came from behind the pacemaker Caladium and was going away at the end. Prince Regent finished second and Caladium third.
