POISONED ARROW AMAZES Easily Wins Duke of York Stakes at Kempton Park. Soubriquet, tlie Favorite, Runs Disappointingly Throughout and Finishes Eleventh Race Worth 510,000 to "Winner. i BY B. E. COUSSELL. LONDON, England, Oct. 13. Poisoned Arrow amazed the crowd at Kempton Park by the easy manner in which he won the Duke of York Handicap today. This race, run over ten furlongs, was worth about 0,000 to the winner. There was such an open appearance about the handicap that C to 1 was offered against the high-class field. The actual favorite was the filly Soubriquet, which won the race last year carrying 108 pounds. This year she had ten pounds moro in the saddle. It was thought she had returned to her best form. She ran disappointingly and finished eleventh in a field of fourteen. Perhaps the deep going beat her and accounts also for the poor display of Moabite and Solicitude. DRY TOAST IN FRONT. The uncertain Dry Toast, carrying 116 pounds, jumped away in front, though at the start Verdict, which was strongly fancied, was crossed by the top weight Roman Bachelor. She was running under difficulties lor the major portion of the race. After going three-quarters Poisoned Arrow took up the running. From that point the race was a procession. Poisoned Arrow passed the winning post three lengths in front of his stable companion Roman Bachelor, which took second place at the distance; Light Dragoon was third. The course was not far enough for him. His owner thought him hardly sharp enough but hoped the deep going would help the colt. Poisoned Arrow must have won with fourteen pounds in hand. He shoulders a ten-pound penalty in the Cambridgeshire. Even bo he must possess a big chance. His weight Is 126 pounds, or two pounds less than Epi-nard, which will also be conceding a year to the Duke of York Handicap winner. If he can do it, as his supporters assert, then he must be a remarkable colt. POISONED ARROWS FIRST WIN. It was the first race Poisoned Arrow won this season, though his second in the Chesterfield Cup at Goodwood was full of merit Last year he ran second to Soubriquet in tho Duke of York Handicap after having been amiss from kidney trouble for some time. Next time out, carrying 103 pounds, he finished second to Re-Echo in the Cambridgeshire, having been bumped in the last eighth. A whole brown, except for a little white in the near hind heel. Poisoned Arrow is a good looking but rather leggy colt. I expected he would have lost some of this legginess from three to four years, but he has not done so. He was bred at the National Stud and cost 6,500 as a yearling at Newmarket. He is the second foal of "White Lie. Her first, False Alarm, won the Derby Cup last season. She is by "White Eagle whose daughters are doing so well as winner producers from Jeans Folly. She bred nine winners, Including "White Satin and Night Hawk. He won the St. Leger in 1913. Jeans Folly was an unbeaten two-year-old and is by Ayrshire from Black Cherry, which produced Cherry Lass, winner of the One Thousand Guineas and the Oaks. The next dam, Black Duchess, bred Bay Ronald. He became the sire of Bayardo and Dark Ronald. It will be seen that Poisoned Arrow comes of lineage of the highest excellence and when his racing career has terminated should make a name for himself at the stud. The Duke of York Handicap was noteworthy in as much as K. F. Gooch trained the first and second, though Poisoned Arrow and Roman Bachelor ran on their merits, as they represent different interests.
