CALIFORNIA RACING BACK 1 Crowd of 25,000 Witness Return of Sport at Tanforan. Saturdays Inauguration Glowing Tribute to the Sport Great Interest Respite Absence of Betting. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Nov. 5. Californias return to a prominent place on the turf was marked by a record turnout of spectators at Tanforan on Saturday, a perfect afternoon of sunshine and warmth and a glorious outburst of enthusiasm. Fully 25,000 crowded the boxes, the grandstand and overflowed to the infield. The beautiful clubhouse was thronged with fashionably dressed men and women. By train and motor the crowds filed into the marvelous new race course, where the sport is being revived. It was an occasion to quicken the pulse and dim the eyes of old California horsemen, who were present by the hundred, to see the horse come back into his own. No greater day of racing has ever been known in this state, which was formerly such a keen rival of Kentucky as the home of great horses. No betting of any description was permitted and the horse lovers lived up to the law. There were many that felt the urge to put down a bet on their choice, but they followed the request of the Pacific Coast Jockey Club to refrain from any speculation. That California loves racing and wants it back was indicated when the field of twelve answered the bugle call and paraded to the post for the first race. The mass of men, women and children arose as one and made the air ring with cheers. It was one round of applause after another as the horses paraded past the stand and back again. No more appropriate opening could have been staged. Runstar, the handsome son of Runnymede, carried A. B. Spreckels colors to victory. No more popular triumph could have been planned. A. B. Spreckels is president of the Jockey Club and the outstanding figure in bringing back the sport.
