Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Nov. 6, 1903 Racing at Aqueduct and Latonia. W. C. Whitney paid a visit to the Aqueduct track and accompanied starter Mars Cassidy to the post for the second race. Mr. Whitney expressed himself as being highly pleased with the system of starting that Mr. Cassidy has introduced at the Queens County track and said that it would be introduced at all the metropolitan tracks in due time. Mr. Whitney incidentally secured the use of one of the gates used by Mr. Cassidy and will school his horses to it during the winter at Aiken, S. C. Mr. Whitney during the afternoon announced that all of his horses in England will be sold at auction the first week in December, including Hands Around, by Meddler Hand-spun, which ran third in the Middls Park Plate this year and is eligible for the Derby. With one less meeting held the Chicago racing field produced 1,701 more in 1903 than it did in 1902. Had two meetings been held at Lakeside, as was the case last year, the increase would probably have reached the 0,000 mark. Washington Park, one meeting; Hawthorne, four meetings, Harlem, four meetings; Worth, two meetings, and Lakeside with one meeting were the means of distributing a grand total of 98,006 during 1903. Last year S. C. Hildreth headed the Chicago list of owners with a total of 5,520 won. This year the honors and profit of leadership fell to F. Cook. Last year his horses won ,433. This y-ar they landed 8,766, to which his splendid two-year-old English Lad was the chief contributor. This year Hildreths earnings fell away to 0,-198. Edward Corrigan won the substantial sum of 3,235, which is more than his stable earned everywhere last year. John A. Drake fell from 5,840 in 1902 to ,820 in 1903. In the Chicago field the winner of the American Derby always heads th2 list of winning horses, so this year The Picket is first with the substantial sum of 7,225 to his credit. In this years list the two-year-old English Lad is second with winnings of 7,105. Last year Lucien Appleby was third with 9,715.
