VETERAN RIDERS IN LEAD J. Callahan and A; Pickens in Hard Fight for Saddle Honors in Cuba. HAVANA, Cuba, Jan. 22. Jockey Arthur Pickens, one of the real veterans of the saddle, is riding in better form than ever here this winter and i3 giving jockey Johnny Callahan, another old timer a great battle for the riding honors of the meeting. Callahan leads by two mounts and is performing in brilliant fashion, especially on the W. R. Coe horses. He will ride for the Coe establishment on the New York tracks this summer. For nine years past he has been under engagement to William Martin, whoso horses are in winter quarters at Churchill Downs. Jockeys J. Dawson and F. Kiniry appear to be the best prospects among the apprentice riders here. The former is a protege of James Fitzsimmons, while Kiniry is under contract to Carl Wiedemann, Newport, Ky., turfman. Both were sent here this winter in quest of riding experience and they are getting it. Dawson was making quite a reputation for himself when he incurred a suspension of ten days for rough riding. Kiniry, who has been tutored by trainer Bob Gilmore, in his day a star rider himself, jumped into the limelight quickly hero. This lad has an excellent seat on a horse and a nice pair of hands. If he continues to improve it is more than probable that he will be found astride In Memoriam on the Kentucky tracks next spring and summer. He is alert at the barrier and puts up a rousing finish for a boy of his limited experience. ! His most valuable asset is his willingness to ! learn and as a result of this the older riders I are more than willing to help him.
