METROPOLITAN CANDIDATES First Big Mile Handicap of the New York Season Attracts 103. Famous Old Race of the Westchester Association Promises a Worthy Renewal at Belmont Tark. NEW YORK, X. Y., Jan. 2G. Each New York racing season there is a world of interest in the Metropolitan Handicap, the mile test that begins the Belmont Park meeting of the Westchester Racing Association. It ever has been a race that brings the best in training together and its roster of winners is a truly remarkable one. Old Mad Hatter, the temperamental son of Fair Play and Mad Cap, has been winner of the last two runnings under the silks of the Rancocas Stable, and he is eligible again this year. It is well remembered that it was in the Metropolitan that James R. Keenes great Sysonby ran a dead heat with O. L. Richards Racing King in 1905, the year that Belmont Park was opened. On through the glorious history o.f the race can be found the name of many a champion of his day, but to Mad Hatter goes the honor of being the only horse to be twice winner. The Metropolitan of this year is of ,000 added value and the 103 nominations that were received comprise the best of the handicap division. The weights are to be announced by Walter S. Vosburgh, handi-cappcr for the Jockey Club, ten days before the running, but already there is interest in the eligibles. There would be much greater interest with an early announce-j ment of the weights, as was the rule some years back, but it is still of interest to know just Avhat may be expected for the old race this year.
