OWNER OS1 NOTED HORSE DIES In England recently Edward Lawson, a retired Wigton and district farmer, and formerly a well-known sportsman, died, aged sixty-five. He once OAvned Old Joe bred by the late Mr. E. H. Banks, of Highmoor, Wig-ton, Avhich, in OAvnership Avith the late Mr. Johnstone Douglas, Avon the Grand National Steeplechase in 188G. Old Joe Avas sold as a yearling for 75, but under Mr. Lawsons tutelage blossomed into a fencer of unusual merit. Avinning seven races out of nine. Once Mr. Lawson rede him seAen miles straight acrcss country, Avitiiout touching a road, except AAhen crossing it. Mr. Johnstone Douglas gaAe ,500 for the horse, and Avas said to have Avon 0,000 by its Grand National success. I
