BILL SPIVINS set the early pace and, after being passed, came again in the stretch anil raced into a good lead in the last eighth. LUSTRE moved up rapidly on the outside on the turn out of thi backstretch into a clear lead, but tired near the end. BENGALI closed a big gap and finished gamely. SIMPLM SIMON was outrun to the stretch turn, but close up with a good burst of speed in the stretch drive, WALTER WHITAKER quit after going a half mile in the lead.
