5 5 1 1 t Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Feb. 24, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles. A. Simons has sold the former Crescent City Derby winner, King Barleycorn, to W. P. Reed. S. C. Hildreths recent purchase, Friar Tuck, ran into another horse while at exercise Thursday morning at New Orleans, then ran into a fence and dislocated his stifles. It is doubt-whether the colt will recover. Among the notable sprinters named for the Benning spring handicaps are Rosetint, Toscan. Peter Paul, Himself, Castalian, Tribes Hill, II- lyria and Typhonic. Himself, which won these events for Bill Daly last year, is in line to repeat, so the sage of Hartford says. Fourteen head of horses, included in which were Pat Civills Barney Dreyfus, Fred Lu- zaders Shepherd, Woolsack and Dean Lee; J. C. Cahns string, and the aged Curd Gillick, left Montgomery Park yesterday for Hot Springs. Lee Wedderstrand, who will ride for Fred Luzader, was among the departures. Port Royal, in winning the daily handicap at New Orleans, established a new track record for one mile and seventy yards, lowering the mark to 1:43. llobbins rushed Port Royal to the front in the run around the first turn and set a remarkably fast pace, then had to i2 hard ridden through the last furlong to stall off Lev Dorseys challenge. The latter ran the best race of his career, but tired suddenly after getting on even terms with the winner. New York, which finished-third, displayed sparkling speed in the early stages of the race, Phillips having him under a slight pull, but when called on he could not respond effectively. The start was marred by Mauser stumbling just as the barrier went up.
