FREEBOOTER raced PONJOLA into defeat in the first half, then took a long lead and won in a canter. PONJOLA, after setting and forcing the pace, gave way to the winner, but found no contention for second place. HUON PINE ran well and outstayed ROCK AND RYE. The latter closed a great gap and finished rapidly wearing the winner down. FAIR ORIENT, after being badly outrun early, gained rapidly on the backstretch but, after looming up menacingly, tired and was lucky to save third place. The latter finished fast and outstayed POLLY WALE. The latter was hard ridden and did her best. JACK BAUER was through after setting the pace until entering the stretch. MELACHRINO was going fast at the end. CURLAND was in close quarters on the backstretch and was forced to pull up. Overweight Jack Bauer, 3 pounds.
