v 1 Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of May 13, 1904 Racing at Morris Park, Worth, Louisville, Kansas City, Union and Delmar Parks at St. Louis. The return of Fred Gibhard to the turf is signalized in the purchase of Pulsus. He closed a deal with John E. Madden at Morris Park Thursday for the three year -old son of Top Gallant Glen Hop. It is understood that Madden will continue to train the colt. People who expectorate over their smaller digits when they meet a cross-eyed person, those who regard walking under a ladder an ill omen and such as retrace their steps should a cat cross tbeir path doubtless are of the opinion that the defeat of five favorites and the low order of racing today at Worth is attributable to the fact that it was Friday and the thirteenth of the month. But to a person who sees racing through eyes not blinded by prejudice and who has no thought of "hoodoos* and kindred superstitions, there were other and natural causes for the tumbling of the public choices. To begin with they were generally poor selections from a poor card. The first favorite to fall by the wayside was Kid Weller. He at no time figured as a contender. The race went to Yada. Old Montalic. carrying an impost of 115 pounds and little regarded in the ring, got to the wire first, a nose in front of the favorite, Glen Gallant, in the second race. The latter was earning sixte?n pounds less than the winner. The next favorite to disappoint was Sincerity Belle. Broadway Girl beating her home by two and a half lengths. Marco was the only strongly played horse to win all day and his victory came in the sixth and last race. At that he only got the judges decision by a nose from Presentation. The ban against Mdton Henry, who was on the ground for two days after the Hands Across race on Wednesday, was lifted today and the young man is at liberty to accept mounts for S. C. Hildreth, his employer, and others. a
