j j J i I j j , I Grainger Memorial Handicap Today LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 23. — Fourteen of the best thoroughbred three-year olds and over to be found in the West have been named to contest at Churchill Downs Saturday afternoon in the twelfth running of the Grainger Memorial Handicap, formerly the Kentucky Handicap, at one and a quarter, which next to the Kentucky Derby is regarded as tha most important stake fixture of the spring meeting. The race this year will fully measure up to the ideal which John Hachmeister had in mind when he instituted this important fixture at Douglas Park in 1913. The field is of comfortabb proportions and possibly will retain its full strength, if the track remains fast for the running of the race. But even if there should be two or three withdrawals the race will not lose in attractiveness. If all fourteen of tin horses named overnight go to the post the race will have a gross value of 5,625, of which the winners net portion will be 2,575, the second horse will receive ,500, the third will earn 00 and the fourth 00. Additional interest will attach to the race due to the fact that Beau Butler, Chilhowee, King Gorin II. and Modest, four contestants in the Kentucky Derby, are listed as starters. The field, with post positions, weights and probable riders, follows: P.P. Horse. Wt. Owner. Jcckey. Trainer. 1- Barracuda 102 S. N. Hclman D. Mergler C. Howard 2-Hopeless 107 H. P. Headley E.
