, j I ! Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of August 20, 1904 Racing at Saratoga, Hawthorne, Highland Park, Detroit and Fair Grounds at St. Louis. A two-year-old of a high order of speed, that by reason of being well engaged is enabled to carry off some of the more important stakes ! for horses of that age, is a remarkably valuable piece of property. As examples in proof of that statement the case of Tanya, Syspnby and Tradition are in point. Each of this trio is as yet undefeated. Newton Benningtons great three-year-old filly Beldame added the Saratoga Cup to her list of stake victories today and defeated the crack Africander by four lengths, while following the latter was the American Derby winner of 1903, The Picket. Caughnawaga and Major Daingerfield brought up the rear. It was Beldame from the rise of the barrier to, the finish and her lead varied from four to six lengths. Beldamo carried only 106 pounds, while the others carried 126 and 127 j pounds. The filly was the favorite and nevjer gave her backers an anxious moment;
