CROWD IN A FRENZY Hawthorne Spectators Thrilled by Spectacular Finish. Rock Heather Defeats Prince Tii Tii by Matter of Inches in Main Race. HAWTHORNE RACE TRACK, Aug. 25. The mile handicap which featured Hawthornes racing Monday afternoon was productive of one of those stirring finishes that puts a crowd in a frenzy. On this occasion it furnished an extra thrill in the fact that an extreme outsider, Rock Heather, was the victor, by a matter of inches from Prince Tii Tii, with Quince Garden following close up and having been one of the strong factors in the final drive. Rock Heather was pounds the best and he showed a vastly improved form over recent performances. The diminutive Griffin, who had the mount, for no reason apparently took him out of contention at the first turn until he was hopelessly last. He then rode wide for the remainder of the trip, but in spite of all the handicap he had to overcome he came like a rocket and disposing of the rear guard went after the leaders in determined style, and standing a gruelling drive near the end, got home by a margin of inches before Prince Tii Tii. Ideal weather and racing conditions prevailed today and it contributed considerable towards bringing out another big attendance. The racing offering was a splendid one and resulted in excellent, sport featured by several close finishes. FAVORITES TROVE ELUSIVE. Favorites in most instances were elusive, "but with the exception of Rock Heather all the other winner had substantial backing. The three-quarters purse, which served as a secondary feature, brought to the post some good sprinters, including Glide. She finished in third place, but would have raced better with good handling. Fronk rode her listlessly and allowed her to swerve in the stretch, interfering sharply with Barn Dollar and contributting extensively to his failure. The race was won by Go Foin after a hard drive to down Blotter. The leading pair had somewhat the best of the send-off and dominated the running. Had Glide had a good ride and Barn Dollar not suffered as extensively as he did from interference and a poor send-off they would have had the contest between them. The opening race found Winrock, favorite, going down to defeat by the Audley Farm Stables representative Dangerillo. The latter was benefitted by Stutts good riding and it enabled her to be a strong factor for the entire way and outstay Winrock when she made a bold bid. Outcast, a well supported outsider, finished in third place. There was a good deal of activity about Promising .Laura and Gliding Fox in the race but both were badly beaten when the actual racing began. Some ordinary ones met in the second race at three-quarters, with the erratic Muskallonge enjoying slight favoritism. He was on his best behavior today, but he gave away in the final drive to Ann M. Theo, after a stormy journey, .finished in third place. COYNE BIG SURPRISE. Coyne, which in preceding races had been tiring badly after showing good speed for three-quarters, surprised all when he lasted the mile and a sixteenth to beat home Dorius. Liierre finished third here. Coyne was helped to his success by Ellis shutting Dorius off when he atempted to come through next the inner rail in the last eighth. Pool failed to lodge a complaint and the placing was not disturbed. The final race brought an evenly matched field, with Raider and Extra Edition the choices. They made it a clean sweep in the matter of favorites downfall when they finished in the wake of Citizen and Elias O. Citizen showed a smart effort and it was his second consecutive victory in succeeding racing days. Jockey Boganowski had to suspend riding after the third race on account of an injury to his leg caused in the jam that came when most of the field were racing closely together there.
