FINE IMPORTED STALLION Coq Gaulois, Winner of 551,000 Francs, Arrives to Head Stud of George A. Saportas. NEW YORK, N. Y., Sept 9. The steamer "Minnetonka," which arrived this week, brought over a number of thoroughbreds for various owners. The star of the lot was the gray stallion Coq Gaulois, purchased from the Due De-cazes through E. J. Tranter for George A. Saportas of Malvern Hill Farm, Malvern, Pa. Coq Gaulois was a sensational race horse in France both on the flat and over the jumps. He made his first appearance as a three-year-old in 1918, starting in four races, three of which he won, being placed third in the other. As a four-year-old he won both on the flat and over the jumps, but it remained for his five-year-old form to prove him one of the best all-around horses ever bred in France. That year he won on the flat the Handicap dOctobrc 25,000 francs and Prix de la Societe dEncouragement at Vichy; was second twice including Prix du Printemps, anu third in Prix Flying Fox and Handicap de la Seine. Over the jumps ho won the Granu Steeplechase de Paris, Prix du President de la Republique, Prix Murat, Prix de Monte Carlo and Prix du Phalanstere, and was second in five races including Grand Prix de la Ville de Nice. Ho also won in 1921 and 1922 and during his career he started thirty-nine times in all, winning seventeen races and being placed in sixteen races. His total winnings amounted to 551,000 francs. Coq Gaulois is a gray stallion, foaled In 1915, by Royal Dream, winner of the Goodwood Plate and other first-class races and a son of the Derby and St. Leger winner Persimmon. The dam of Coq Gaulois was Con-fiserie, a winner and dam of several stake winners. She was a daughter of Le Basilic, a son of the great Le Sancy. The second dam, Confiture, was a producing daughter of Upas. Coq Gaulois will undoubtedly prove a great acquisition to the lits of imported stallions standing in this country. His first produce are now yearlings in France, and it is reported that they are highly considered.
