SARAZENS GRAND RACE Gives Weight and Beating to Zev and Other Fast Horses. Carries 128 Pounds to Impressive Victory In ATernc Handicap Epinard in Another Trial, t AQUEDUCT RACE TRACK, NEW YORK, N. Y., Sept. 24. Sarazen, under a burden of 12S pounds and giving away both weight and age to all the starters except Zev, was winner of the three-quarters of the Averne Handicap at Aqueduct today in clever fashion. It was the Rancocas Stables Zev that raced to second place and just a nose back of him was the Audley Farms Miss Star. Four lengths still farther back was John S. Wards Worth-more and A. C. Bostwicks Shuffle Along brought up the rear. The race was worth ?3,625 to the winner. This was the feature of a rather interesting program and an added attraction of the day was a public workout of Epinard. With Everett Haynes in the saddle the French champion was eased up a mile in 1:39 and he gave further evidence of his fitness for the mile race Saturday. The performance of Sarazen was a sparkling one and he finished out the three-quarters under his crushing burden in a fashion to suggest that he may be ready for a much longer route. When Babin brought the swift running gelding back to the scales it was observed that he was bleeding slightly from the mouth and it occasioned some apprehension, but an examinotion revealed that he had merely knocked the cap off a tooth, and that the injury was of no consequence. From a good start Zev was first to show from the barrier, with Worthmore secoiid, Miss Star third, Sarazen fourth and Shuffle Along last Almost at once Miss Star raced by Zev and she may have been a bit close to the Rancocas Stable four-year-old as she took command. Worthmore went after her and Babin had circlde around on the outside with Sarazen to have him in third place. Miss Star, showing her best speed, was still a length clear as she swung for home, but by that time Sarazen had Worthmore headed and Babin was sitting still and riding with rare confidence. Worthmore was a length and a half back of Mrs. Vanderbilts gelding and Zev ran right at his tail, while Shuffle Along was rather a bad last and dropping farther back. It was not until inside the last eighth that Sarazen caught Miss Star, but he had not been urged to any great extent by Babin and when he came to the filly it was all Continued on sixteenth page. SARAZENSJRAND RACE Continued from first page. over for he went on by to win going away by a length. Then Zev charged up on the outside to nose out Miss Star for second place with Worthmore and Shuffle Along both soundly beaten. The race was run in -1:11 which was excellent time considering the weight that was carried. In this running Zev performed without the blinkers for the first time and his- race was one -to suggest that he does not -need that equipment to show to his best advantage. The opening race was a five-eighths dash for maiden two-year-olds and Francis R. Hitchcocks Mixture scored a close decision over J. S. Wards May Fly with the Sanford Stud Farms Viiha finishing third. Mixturo and Vilna cut out most of the running, but May Fly fought her way up until she was a contender when the last eighth was reached. There some bumping followed in which May Fly was a sufferer and Mixture appeared to be chiefly to blame. Right at the end May Fly hung slightly and Mixture was winner by a head while the Ward filly was three lengths before Vilna. The steeplechase over the short course, brought out three starters and John Kermath saddled the ones that were first and second when TL P. Smith Jrs Bethany led from end to end and Houyhnhnm bearing the Kermath silks beat Mrs. R. T. Bakers Peccant for second place. Rather a nice band of platers came together in the seven-eighths of the third race, and George Odom furnished the winner in Robert L. Gerrys Quarantine, the top weight of the party. He scored over H. M. Pearsons Potentilla and G. Konigswalds Better Times save third. Skirmish was the one to cut out the early pace and Better Times chased after her while Thurber avoided that pace with the winner. Before- the eighth post in the stretch was reached, Skirmish weakened and as ODonnell called on Better Times he swerved sharply to the inside losing some ground. At the same time Potentilla was closing strongly on the inside, while Qarantine was racing strongly on the outside. In the last sixteenth Quarantine came by to win going away with plenty to spare while Potentilla outgamed Better Times when the pinch came. The fifth race was a split of the first race and the Marrone Stable furnished the winner in Gertrude D. She ran as though much the best and at the end was easily showing the way to J. L. Hollands Roiville with H. C. Fishers Bobbed Bandit beating John Mad-dens Honey Pot for third. Marshall Field III. supplied the winner of the closing race of the afternoon when Thurber had Stimulus home in an easy manner. Despot was the one to race to secend place while Titan was third. It would not be surprising if after all Sam Hildreth depended on old Mad Hatter for the second International Special. The old fellow was worked an nasy mile in 1:39, after the running of the first race -at Aqueduct today and in the trial he seemed to show all his old-time speed and ambition.
